      <p>The California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) will vote
        whether to do a special investigation called an OII(Order
        Instituting Investigation) for San Onofre on August 2nd at the
        CPUC’s headquarters in San Francisco at 9:00 AM during their
        regular meeting.</p>
      <p>What’s at stake couldn’t be more important.  The CPUC has the
        power to close San Onofre on the grounds that it is no longer
        economically viable to run.  The politically appointed
        commissioners will be under immense pressure to allow Southern
        California Edison (SoCal Ed), the company that owns San Onofre,
        to continue with the status quot.  In fact, the chairman of the
        CPUC, Michael Peevey, also happens to be the former head of
        SoCal Ed. There has been major pressure for Peevey to step down
        because his role in protecting PG&E from stronger actions as
        a result of the 2009 San Bruno gas pipeline explosion.  At a
        minimum he should either step aside on this issue due to a
        conflict of interest or vote for the investigation.</p>
