NRC: GEIS - In-Situ Leach Uranium Mining

Urgent Alert: Draft Uranium Mining GEIS delay requests needed

The NRC is closing the comment period on October 7 for the draft Generic Environmental Impact Statement (NUREG-1910, Vol. 1) for approval of in-situ leach uranium mining operations . It is absolutely critical that we get as many comments before the NRC either online or by letter calling for an extension of at least 90 - 180 days before closing the comment period.   Handwritten comments must be postmarked by September 26, 2008!

This is more than just a minor delay tactic! The country is fully aware of the fact that energy market traders have driven up the price of oil and other commodities. Using the Enron loophole we have seen the price of uranium reignite a new push to uranium mining industry here and elsewhere. Delaying this GEIS long enough for a new administration to finally force the CTFC and congress to remove the Enron loophole will save ratepayers from eating another bubble, as well as putting a focus on the NRC's agenda of ramroding unsafe ISL practices through.

The Bush administration and USEC have been attempting to start a new cold war with Russia as well dismantling the MOX fuel exchange program. Any wonder why?

PLEASE RESPOND- NRC NEEDS TO SEE AS MANY REQUESTS FOR DELAYS AS POSSIBLE!

2. Applicable Statutes, Regulations, and Agencies.
3. Purpose of the Draft GElS and Use in Site-Specific Licensing Reviews.
4. Opportunities for Public Involvement.
5. Applicable Rulemaking Activities.
6. Land Use.
7. Transportation.
8. Geology.
9. Water Resources.
10. Ecology.
11. Meteorology, Climatology, and Air Quality.
12. Noise.
13. Historic and Cultural.
14. Visual Resources.
15. Socioeconomics.
16. Public and Occupational Health.
17. Waste Management.
18. Decontamination, Decommissioning, Reclamation.
19. Accidents.
20. Environmental Justice.
21. Cumulative Impacts.
22. Monitoring.
23. Financial Assurance.
 
In other words, read the GEIS and help sanity return to our energy policy. Let's take back our energy policy from the foreigners controlling our economy.
If enough of us request an extension to the deadline ending the comment period, the NRC will grant our request, regardless of what Wyo. Gov. Freudenthal says. But whatever you do, don't use comments such as NUKES IS BAD, read the GEIS first. My personal feeling is that it is just a high priced prospecting guide for the foreign controlled uranium mining companies using American lackeys to promote their agendas!
