Dear Friends,
We need to act quickly to counter the nuclear power industry's political strategy to undermine our supporters in Congress and the California legislature.
Concerned that Congressional leaders have been misled by nuclear industry lobbyists, representatives from Public Citizen and the Union of Concerned Scientists are meeting Friday, April 20th, with members of Congress to explain that nuclear power is not a sustainable technology.
The phrase now bandied about the Halls of Congress, "we must keep nuclear power on the table as part of the energy mix," is being repeated by our own Congressional representatives, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi and Senator Dianne Feinstein.
Why is this dangerous? Just this week, California State Assemblyman Chuck DeVore (R-Irvine) invoked Pelosi and Feinstein's names and identified them as supporters of nuclear power, while urging the repeal of California's Nuclear Safeguards Act. Thanks to letters from many of the Alliance's supporters, this bill went down to defeat in committee on April 16, and the moratorium that prohibits building any new nuclear power plants until there is a safe, permanent storage for high-level nuclear waste was upheld. For now.
We Need Your Help Again
Please help us stop the redefining of "green" and "sustainable." Call your representatives, Speaker Pelosi and Senator Feinstein. Ask them to vote against subsidies for the nuclear industry. Remind them that including nuclear power in an energy portfolio to reduce greenhouse gases is in direct opposition to the state's policy prohibiting new nuclear power development.
Your phone calls will support the visits by Public Citizen and the Union of Concerned Scientists and together we will begin to counter the propaganda that promotes nuclear power as green, and begin to forge a truly sustainable energy future.
