Realize that the transit plan has nothing to do with Mid-market becoming a Redevelopment Area. The issues around parking etc are part of the proposed Mid-Market Special Use District. This is going forward regardless of the status of Redevelopment so its good you're getting prepared. Also, I believe pedestrian and other street and sidewalk improvements can be funded by the proposed Greater Market St. CBD. If you want a sense of how Redevelopment spends pedestrian money, look at how they spent 8 months and over $1 million to widen 6th Street sidewalks by 12-18 inches. You know me -- I spoke at the press conference on the steps of City Hall in October on behalf of the San Francisco Green Party. I am co-chair of the Transportation Working Group of the San Francisco Green Party (John-Marc Chandonia is my fellow co-chair). The TWG is planning a summit on Mid-Market transportation policies (should there be redevelopment in Mid-Market) for Saturday, December 10, from 3 to 5 p.m. I have talked to Dave Wilbur (co-chair of the Housing and Land Use Working Group) and gotten suggestions for people to invite, and you're among them. He has also suggested Dave Snyder (who, in turn, has suggested Jeremy Nelson, but Dave will do it if Jeremy can't), someone from SOMCAN, Jim Meko, and Jazzie Collins. The San Francisco Green Party has endorsed the following three general transportation points for Mid-Market, should there be redevelopment there: 1) There should be no more than .25 parking spaces per housing unit, and we ask that you seriously consider going lower, with the greatest share of parking spaces used for car-share vehicles; 2) There should be no above-ground parking spaces other than the minimum required for the operation of the buildings and the safety of building occupants; 3) The redevelopment plan should include funds specifically dedicated to expanding the bicycle lane network, engineering the Market Street bike lanes, and pedestrian improvements such as countdown signals at all corners within the plan area. Ideally, we would like to organize a unified campaign around these three points and go to the Board of Supervisors to request that they become codified parts of the transportation plan for Mid-Market, but we want to hear what members of the people who live and work in Mid-Market would like.
