Hello Fellow Greens,

This week's newsletter is full of important news and events, including
disappointing courtroom news for Terry Baum, a brunch in Berkeley for David Cobb,
Salsa and Mark Sanchez at El Rio, and precinct walking for Pat Gray and Renee
Saucedo.

In this update:
1. Terry Baum News
2. Pat Gray Update
3. IRV Speakers Wanted
4. Events

TERRY BAUM NEWS:
Just 5 months ago, this newsletter was celebrating the write-in victory of
Green Congressional Candidate Terry Baum. But her efforts to get on the ballot
have been repeatedly stalled, and last week there was more bad news. Judge
Quidachay ruled that Terry Baum cannot have her name placed on the November
ballot. Terry's attorney is continuing legal efforts to get her name on the
ballot, but the court decision was a major setback. Baum will be a write-in
candidate regardless of court decisions. Terry is running in the 8th Congressional
District, a seat currently held by Nancy Pelosi. www.terrybaum.com

The San Francisco Chronicle covered the latest court decision regarding Terry
in its July 30 edition. Find the link at www.sfusualsuspects.com.

Here are some links to the latest video of the courtroom news, courtesy of
Rene Amini.

PAT GRAY UPDATE:
Pat Gray, Green Congressional candidate in District 12, opened a campaign
office over the weekend. Come to a precinct walking mobilization this Sunday,
August 8 at 10 AM at her campaign office, which is a storefront at 212A Miller
Avenue in South San Francisco. Miller is one block north of Grand Avenue, just
off Highway 101. House and yard signs are being developed for Pat, and should
be ready by next week. The campaign is also looking for an office manager.
Pat is running against incumbent pro-war Democrat Tom Lantos. For more
information on Pat's campaign, call 650-692-1728 or email
patgrayforcongress at sbcglobal.net. www.patgray.org

IRV SPEAKERS WANTED:
Steven Hill and others from the Center for Voting and Democracy are seeking
volunteers for a community education speakers bureau. The speakers will go to
community groups and give a short 10-minute presentation about IRV in San
Francisco. The talk will be scripted, with each part cued by visual flash cards.
A speakers training and materials will be provided. A Volunteer Coordinator
is also needed.
If interested, contact Steven Hill from the Center for Voting and Democracy
at shill at fairvote.org.
www.FixingElections.com

The goal is to get a team of 20 or so volunteers -- the IRV Brigade, bringing
the message to San Franciscans that: 1) now we rank our ballots, 1, 2, 3. 2)
it is best to use ALL of your rankings (to make sure you participate in each
runoff round); and 3) your lower choice cannot defeat your higher choice, so
there is no advantage to "bullet voting"
(ranking only one candidate or ranking the same candidate three times).

Community education for IRV/RCV is slowly getting under way. SPUR recently
held a well attended forum on IRV/RCV, and other organizations are doing the
same over the next few weeks. Check out the flash animation on the Web that
shows how IRV/RCV in San Francisco will work.

A Festival of Non-Violence, Ecology, Democracy, Social and Economic Justice
in New York City
Presented by Green Party Office Committee in Manhattan and the Green Focus
Activism Education Center
This event will be coinciding with the Republican National Convention in NYC.
Location will be 139 Fulton Street, Suite 215, New York, NY 10038; Phone
(212) 240-0501 http://www.greenpartyoffice.org/

All Green Party members are invited to attend this event, which takes place
at Washington Square Park in the West Village of Manhattan. This is an
opportunity for Greens to gather with other progressive organizations to focus on the
four key pillars and the ten key values of the worldwide Green Party
movement. Help is needed from Greens around the country to help support our festival
with funds, volunteers and attendance. We are committed to finding housing
for all Green Party members and groups. If you need housing please email
greenpartynyc at hotmail.com.

Live music and speakers are being planned, along with tables for like-minded
progressive organizations to not only protest the Republicans coming to New
York City, but to show the world a strong and viable Green alternative!
Speakers so far include Jason West, David Cobb, Medea Benjamin, Charles Shaw, and
more.

Organizers aim to hold this event separate from the myriad of anti-Republican
activities, keeping the message positive and ensuring the safety of Green
Party members. The Green Party of New York State is working in coalition with
many organizations to hold peaceful, counter demonstrations around the city. As
active members of the UFPJ coalition, we are encouraging all Greens to attend
the planned United for Peace and Justice March and Rally on Sunday, August
29th in Central Park.

If you or your organization is interested in attending, participating,
volunteering, or donating to making our A Green World is Possible Festival a
reality, please feel free to contact us at 212-240-0501 or via email:
info at greenpartyoffice.org.

Thanks to all of our members for your continued support!

Warm Regards,
Erika McDonald
