* James Madison Awards: Deadline for nominations is Friday, Jan. 9.
Winners honoring/shielding freedom-of-information and First Amendment rights will be recognized at SPJ's annual dinner in mid-March; date, time and place TBA. Categories include professional journalist, citizen, legal counsel, nonprofit organization, public official, student journalist, source/whistle blower, educator, librarian, electronic access, cartoonist, career achievement and news media. http://www.spjchapters.org/norcal/

* National Day of Action Against Israel's Invasion of Gaza: Saturday, Jan. 10. 11 a.m.
Civic Center Plaza, Polk and Grove Streets
Groups across the nation will protest Israel's most recent assault in Gaza, including Washington DC, San Diego, Los Angeles and San Francisco. More then 700 people have died, including 215 children, and more than 4000 have been wounded in Israel's reckless attack on Gaza.
