Hi again all,

Since this subject came up..

A whole book has been written on achievable alternatives to nuclear in
fighting the climate crisis, entitled "Carbon Free & Nuclear Free"
which is available free online as an ebook at:

Hi Adam and all,

Aside from the massive problems of waste, accidents, and the fact that
nuclear industry workers get cancer in droves, there are two very
important logistical reasons that nuclear is not the answer to global
warming.

1) Contrary to many claims, nuclear is not carbon free at all, and
produces massive greenhouse gas emissions. This is because fossil fuel
power must be used to refine uranium ore. Due to this, every nuclear
plant in its lifetime, produces one third to one half of the greenhouse
gasses created by a natural gas power plant of equal output. Uranium is
also reaching extraction peak, just like oil. This means that uranium
ore is becoming less and less pure, and so requires progressively more
and more fossil fuel processing to refine it. Because of this peak
uranium problem, if we were to vastly ramp up our use of nuclear plants
such that it began to replace fossil fuel electricity generation, then
within ten years, each nuclear plant would produce the same amount of
greenhouse gasses as a natural gas gas plant of equivalent output.

2) It is so expensive and logistically difficult to build even one
nuclear power plant, that it would be impossible to build any
substantial nuclear power capacity within the next ten years, and
scientists are now saying that it is the next ten years during which we
must drastically reduce our greenhouse gas emissions to avoid a
catastrophic climate crisis.

So even if nuclear were perfectly safe, it would simply not be, in any
way, shape, or form, a solution to the climate crisis.

peace

My reading has lead me to the conclusion that nuclear power is the most viable option we have for energy in a post-oil future. And with no new US plants built in the last 20 years (it may be as long as 30 years, but I can't look it up because I'm on the road) I don't believe it's wise to reduce incentives for new growth.

Since the event is happening in S.F., we thought that we'd let you'all decide first if it's worthy of endorsing.?? Please let me know as soon as you have an idea of what you think you'll do!
