It was the first time I was attending a CA Green plenary last week-end, and , as it is common with such new experience there was few highs and some lows...I will have to learn how to be a "plenary activist", if I want my opinion to be heard... Some fellow delegates already gave me some tips... Thank you. May I suggest that the majors decisions/ endorsements/ etc...finalized at this plenary being posted on the CAGREEN web site... Hi Pierre, Here are my highlights and lowlights from last week's meeting in Davis: Decisions: 1. Affirm Agenda- 3 SF delegates blocked, asking for the Affiliation Agreement to be removed from agenda. Vote taken, agenda passed as presented. 2. Minutes- lots of folks had amendments, which were taken to be integrated to the next draft of the minutes to be approved at next Plenary. 3. Campaign Finance Proposal from the Clean Money Campaign passed; 4. Election Code was withdrawn after much debate. The Limited Voting section was removed but there was some remaining concerns about other aspects of the code. It will be revised and brought back to another meeting for approval. 5. Fair Wage initiative- no vote, advisory discussion on the two options- 7.75 per hour or 8.75 per hour. Ultimate threshold will be determined after the main players- the Democrats and Labor Unions-decide which campaign they will fund. 6. GPUS Delegates- three delegates and one alternate was elected to represent CA to the GPUS: Marybeth Wurthner, Cat Woods and Fred Hosea, with Jan Arnold being the elected Alternate. 7. Two year work plan approved by consensus. 8. CCWG coordinator position voted down, no paid staff to help with elections next year. 9. Affiliation Agreement- after several options for affiliation were approved and the entire delegation was thoroughly confused, there was a straw poll to see what options folks favored followed by a hasty vote on the whole process, and it failed. 10. Consent Calendar, two of three items passed. Saturday night: Peter facilitated a meeting that was called "campaign strategy for 2006 elections". It turned out that this was for "his" slate of candidates for office- him for Gov, Donna Warren for Lt. Gov, Forrest Hill for Sec of State, Larry Cafiero for Insurance Commissioner, a education professional from LA (female) for Superintendent of Public Instruction and a young Arab American man for Treasurer. Todd Chretian is the slate's candidate for US Senate. The campaign theme is "A Million Votes for Peace", and most of the folks in the room were inspired by the idea. Laura Wells was also at the meeting and would have liked to announce that she was a candidate for Controller, but when Peter found out she was there he responded very rudely, accusing her of crashing his meeting and telling her to go set up her own meeting if she wanted to run for office. Peter later demeaned the person who mentioned Laura was in the room, accusing her of backstabbing him and sabotoging his meeting. She was one of his staunch supporters and was near tears at the end of the meeting. Tian Harter, one of three candidates for US Senate (along with Todd Chretian, and Kent Mesplay), and he felt similarly dissed by Peter's comments. In the end, all of the air was sucked out of the room by Peter's inappropriate and angry outburst that followed an otherwise inspiring meeting. I told Peter that I liked him as a candidate and liked his ideas but the meeting sucked at the end because of his outburst at Laura. He and I had a few words after I affirmed that I voted for David Cobb, he closed by saying that David was "for John Kerry- it was on his website" and that "Cobb was not really nominated for president, he stole the nomination and you supported that". It really appears that Peter cannot let go of the events of the summer of 2004. At this point I strongly question his ability to represent the Green party as our candidate for governor. On the other hand, what choice do we have? 11. Write in threshold proposal failed. Folks were worried about Democrats switching at the last minute to Greens to run for office. Sunday: 1. Voting threshold to reduce the threshold from 80% to 66% (2/3) failed. 2. Removal of the Abstention anomoly in the bylaws passed by consensus. 3. Health Care plank passed with some amendments.
