Here are my notes from today's website discussion: 6/13/15 Herrera campaign meeting for discussion of website/videos We want to enable committees to organize autonomously, so we don't need everybody to get together at big meetings. Camillo using Google Calendar to organize events; want to invite volunteers using that. We want a public Google calendar so people can see our events & appearances, maybe a private campaign calendar as well for events such as steering committee meetings. 300 volunteers signed up on NationBuilder, 70 "active" (meaning, they get invited to events). We need to port this to a real website when available. Francisco & Camillo have admin password for NB. Stuff we want on new website: * contact info for campaign people * better pictures * platform * videos * ability to sign up / donate (as on NB). * blog * Twitter/FB feeds We should consider Facebook ads "sponsored posts" in the future. Good websites to emulate: Jane Kim, Phil Ting. Need more social media - Twitter, FB posts from events. Somebody who's always with Francisco needs to install phone app (e.g., Hootsuite) to be able to post to different social media accounts as events happen. Campaign has $500 budget for web design. Dietrich will ask his friend; if not, Atilla said he knows possible volunteers. BUT before website can be designed, we'll need a visual theme / logo (e.g., Jane Kim's Red/White logo). We discussed using the "guitar" logo from the 2nd draft window sign, but there are still concerns that it might look like a musical promotion rather than a Mayoral campaign. Other logo/ icon ideas? Heart-like logo? We need to decide on a hostname for web, email. All of these seem to be available: FranciscoForSF.org FranciscoForSanFrancisco.org FranciscoForMayor.org FranciscoHerrera.org JMC will email list for suggestions, then buy a domain name. Are there any good names that would still be good to use for organizing after the election? Please email any photos or links to stories that we can promote on social media. Any success in organizing the kickoff party? The Greens will be at several events this weekend, including the Haight St Fair and Sunday Streets (Great Highway), so we could use help campaigning at both those places. El 54% de latinos que hablan español no tiene acceso al internet en su hogar Por Fernando Andrés Torres.- El Mensajero. Nov. 16, 2014. La carretera informática de banda ancha no es tan ancha como parece ser. O es porque no todos caben o es porque no todos tienen la oportunidad de transitar por ella; en especial aquellos económicamente desvalidos. Una reciente encuesta reveló que California, el Estado capital de la tecnología mundial, tiene todavía mucho por recorrer para que todos sus habitantes tengan acceso justo e igualitario al internet. Un 25% de californianos en general no tienen acceso a la banda ancha necesaria para navegar por el internet. Cuando se trata de la comunidad latina los porcentajes son alarmantes. La encuesta patrocinada por el California Emerging Technology Fund (CETF), una agencia semi-estatal sin fines de lucro basada en San Francisco, reveló que entre los latinos que hablan español el 54% no tiene acceso al internet en su hogar, entre todos los latinos en general el porcentaje es de 37%. Los otros grupos en desventaja son: personas mayores de 65 años (53%) personas con discapacidad (41%) y de aquellos con ingresos familiares de menos de $ 20.000 dólares anuales, el 47% no tiene conexión al internet. Con estas cifras, la comunidad latina en California se encuentra muy por debajo de los números globales. Según datos de la Unión Internacional para las Telecomunicaciones (UIT) solo un tercio de la población mundial tiene acceso a internet. Es decir 4.500 millones de personas, los dos tercios restantes, no tiene acceso a la carretera informática mundial. Con el 75%, Europa registra el porcentaje de acceso al internet más elevado del planeta, seguida por el continente americano con un 61%; los Estados Árabes, 38%, la región de Asia-Pacífico, 32%, y África al final de la lista con un 16%. Este bajo acceso al internet de las familias latinas no solo representa una alerta para las agencias gubernamentales sino también para las organizaciones y el liderazgo latino en el Estado. “Esa es definitivamente una conclusión que se puede hacer basados en los resultados de la encuesta” dijo Mark DiCamillo director de la compañía The Field Poll que llevó adelante la encuesta. “De cada diez latinos hispano-parlantes solo seis usan el internet. Esto es dramático si lo comparas con el hecho de que el 86% de los californianos usan el internet. Es mas, la encuesta mostró que ¾ de Californianos usan el internet en sus casas y que solo el 46% de latinos hispano-parlantes lo hacen en sus hogares”, dijo DiCamillo. O nos sentamos en la mesa de las oportunidades o nos sentamos en la esquina Pero para la Fundación Chicana-Latina (FCL) basada en Burlingame estos números no son una sorpresa. “Esa experiencia ya la teníamos. Nos dimos cuenta que en muchas casas de familias latinas no existía tecnología, ni computadoras, ni conexión. Tuvimos un programa llamado Juventud Adelante” con el cual “trabajábamos con muchachos de séptimo y octavo grado. Sabíamos que el no tener computadoras en casa estaba afectando como les iba en la escuela”, dijo Alicia Orozco, coordinadora de proyectos de la fundación. Con el programa Conectando a Latinos, el FCL busca a las familias que no están conectadas para ayudarlas y guiarlas. Se renuevan computadoras portátiles y se venden a solo $50 dólares. Google les donó 400 mini computadoras llamadas “tabletas.” y que serán repartidas a través de las escuelas. También se provee de información y consejos: cuales son las compañías, los precios, los productos que se necesitan “para que no les vendan cosas que no necesitan. Por ejemplo en estos momentos la mejor oferta que existe para los padres que tiene a sus hijos en la escuela, es la oferta de Comcast. Si tu hijos esta recibiendo el almuerzo gratis o reducido te va a costar $9.95. ¿Nos gusta Comcast? No. Pero es una alternativa buenísima y hay que tomar ventaja”, aseveró Orozco. Orozco alertó que este es el primer año en que en todas la escuelas de enseñanza media están dando los exámenes solo a través de la computadora. “No hay lápiz ni papel”... si un niño que no esta acostumbrado a usar el teclado - no el teléfono o el tablet, a usar el teclado para tomar un examen, entonces no le va a ir muy bien. Es muy importante que llegue una computadora a todas las casas … O nos sentamos en la mesa en donde están todas las oportunidades o nos sentamos en la esquina y nos tiramos un hueso de vez en cuando”, dijo Orozco. Darle poder a nuestra gente en el siglo 21. Maricela Haro, madre mexicana con cuatro hijos, dijo que el programa de la Fundación Chicana-Latina (FCL) “me ha ayudado muchísimo pues mis hijos tenían que ir a una biblioteca a hacer sus tareas. Ya no tienen que andar pidiendo una computadora para hacer sus tareas, inclusive sus grados escolares han subido. Ahora están en mi casa haciendo sus tareas; no tengo que preocuparme de que se me fueron a otro lado. Haro, de Union City, dijo que la computadora le ha servido incluso para su negocio de ventas de productos naturales. Ha sido una “oportunidad de poder superarme como mama, como hermana, como vecina”, dijo. El FCL tiene una meta: conectar a 3.300 personas. Y la tarea no es nada facil. “Vivimos en uno de los lugares mas caro de este país después de Honolulu. ¡Es horrible! La economía esta bien difícil estamos trabajando con personas que ganan menos de 20 mil dólares al año. El internet y las computadoras son una herramienta para la participación en este siglo. No es como el cable que puedes elegir no usarlo. No puedes estar ya sin el internet y sin computadora. Todo es email. Empezando en enero ya no puedes tomar el examen del GED en papel, tiene que ser en computadoras y tampoco puedes conseguir trabajo. Este proyecto es importantísimo para el futuro de nuestras familias.
