Please note: forwarded message attached SAN FRANCISCO WHEN: May 15, 7-9 pm WHERE: Cafe La Boheme 3318 24th Street at Mission, San Francisco (across from 24th and Mission Bart Station) With singer/songwriter Holly Near, artist Guillermo Gomez-Pena, fomer Green Party U.S. Senate Candidate Barbara Blong, Green Party Planning Commissioner Cristina Olague, formerGreen Party congressional candidate Terry Baum, and more STATEMENT OF INTENT: My name is Krissy Keefer and I am running for the US Congress, as if my life depended on it. In fact, I think it does. Everything is coming to a head. We witness the desperate war in Iraq, the countless deaths and injuries and the complete disruption of peoples lives there. We see our tax dollars taken from our social service programs to disrupt governments around the world. There is a threat to Iran looming in the background. It appears that our federal government is hell-bent on starting World War 3. The United States and Australia are the only countries whose governments do not admit to global warming in the face of international consensus. We are denying the grave consequences we will soon be facing if nothing is done about carbon emissions. There are erosions of our civil liberties through the Patriot Act and now the unbridled disregard for the law regarding the NSA. Womens rights have had a serious setback, culminating in the confirmation of Judge Alito. Our right to birth control is questioned and attempts to prevent basic sex education are apparent everywhere. In California we have the barbarism of the death penalty and the staggering numbers of people in prison, disproportionately people of color. The demonization of illegal immigrants threatens to create a social divide with grave consequences for our community, economy, our borders, and our relationship with Mexico. Everywhere we look, justice has taken a back seat as the 21st century robber barons confiscate and hoard resources at the expense of the planet. Profits for individual CEOs and shareholders have reached unmatched heights, with nothing in place to regulate how much one person can own at the expense of the whole society. Many individuals have personal fortunes that rival the GNP of some nation-states. Enough is enough. It is time to step in, step forward, and stand up for a sustainable future, and that includes economic justice, social change, and accountability in our political leadership.
