The SF Green Party is very sorry that the Beach Chalet soccer field
development was passed by the California Coastal Commission last Thursday.
That a beautiful natural park is being commercialized across from Ocean
Beach is very sad news for us all...except the for ones making money from
it. The SFGP warned SF citizens about the Ballot Measure B/Bond last
November election on our website and our Voter Guide Card. As expected,
the funds are now to be used to install ground up tires, artificial turf
and 60 foot light posts. The whole project will then to be privatized. The
Coastal Commissions report came out against this plan so we are wondering
why they voted against their own staff? See the SFGP Supervisor report
card at www.sfgreenparty.org to learn more/which Supervisors voted to
support this development project.

Green Party County Council member Denise D'Anne wrote the following report
on the decision:

On Thursday, May 9. The California Coastal Commission allowed the San
Francisco Recreation Department to go ahead with its plans for an
artificial turf for the Golden Gate Park Beach Chalet soccer field.

The majority of the speakers during the hearing were proponents of the
soccer field. Only a few spoke against the proposal since most came late
and were refused speaker cards. However, one of Gray Panther members,
Lynn Gavin, demanded to be heard and used the threat of ADA (she is
partially disabled as well and one of the only black people in
attendance.) She was allowed to speak. She spoke eloquently against the
project.

Only one of the commissioners spoke in favor of the staff report that
opposed the proposed soccer field. The commissioner argued that the

not be swayed by any argument put forth by the proponents or San Francisco
City officials to the contrary.

Apparently none of the remaining commissioner agreed. They did argue for
some kind of mitigation. One was to restore 4 acres contiguous to the
7-acre soccer field to its natural state. Originally, the intent of the
Rec & Park was to give the 4 acres to SFPUC for a water treatment plant.
SF Ocean Edge and The Golden Gate Park Preservation Alliance successfully
rallied against using this land for a treatment plant. Another fact of the
leaders of the fight against despoiling the grassy soccer field 150,000
watts of stadium light that will be turned on until 10:00 pm.

Health effects were never discussed despite excellent testimony from a
doctor about myriad future health effect including causing cancer from the
use of synthetic grass. Briefly, some discussion revolved around
monitoring the flyway to protect birds. But that went nowhere as another
mitigating factor because who would do the monitoring?
