For Nov 6 (so it wouldn't effect the election) MTA Director Announces "Transit TV" Pilot - With Ads This kind of crap is exactly why I opposed giving more money and authority to the MTA. It's too bad Prop A won. We're about to get five more years of meltdown and insults to common sense... I couldn't vote against Prop A, as I'd intended to, adamantly, or for or against anything else because the Prop A campaign hung some agit-prop on my door handle directing me to the wrong polling place, and, by the time the Jersey St. polls turned me away and I got to the Firehouse on 26th St., the polls were closed, I complained to the Dept. of Elections and the Elections Commission and I still have the flyer that the Prop A. campaign hung on my door last Tuesday directing me to the wrong polling place, fecklessly or intentionally. Ann -- They wouldn't let you vote provisionally? I thought any polling place in the city had to allow registered SF voters to vote on a provisional ballot, which then gets hand-counted at City Hall. I'm astounded that you would get turned away by a polling place. That only happened to me one time in my life, over 20 years ago, & it still stings every time I think about it. It is totally illegal, from my understanding, for a pollworker to do that. I'm saying that because that's what I was told after the same thing happened to me. The Board of Supervisors can still deny the revenue contract that the MTA will have to sign to approve TVs on buses or trains, and I hope they do, because this is a terrible idea. The pilot project might slip below the threshhold for approval by the board, but that would have been the case before Prop A, too, because Prop A didn't change that. If the MTA projects certain revenues from the TV advertising, the Board can reject the MTA's budget with 7 votes (before Prop A it would have required 8). Considering that Board of Supervisors last rejected the MTA's budgets in order to reduce parking costs to motorists, they had better reject a budget that degrades the transit environment for customers by placing TV ads. My point is that it is a pretty bad sign that we have put our eggs in the basket of more latitude for MTA staff, and the very first thing they propose once gaining that latitude is to fund Muni with more private advertising.
