GREENZINE
SF Green Party Weekly News and Events

NEWS:

1. Good news that the California San Onofre nuclear plant is shut
down! "Officials from the San Onofre nuclear reactor said the warning
siren that went off... was just a malfunction and no one should worry.
Hey, I worry, if they can't even get the siren to work right, what the
hell are they doing with the reactor??" --Jay Leno 1/20/10

2. ANTI-SUNSHINE PROPOSALS IN CALIFORNIA DRAFT BUDGET:
Gov. Brown proposes to (1) impose fees for access to court
records and (2) halt reimbursements to local governments
cities, counties, school and community college districts
etc.) for expenses incurred in complying with state public-
records laws. These proposals fly in the face of California
Constitution Article I, Section 3, which enshrines into the
supreme law of the state the people's right to know what their
governments are doing and why. That section was added when voters
passed Proposition 59 by an 83% to 17% margin in November, 2004.

The budget is before an eight-member Senate-Assembly conference
committee. The Legislature must adopt a budget by Friday,
June 15, or members' pay will be docked for every day they go
beyond the deadline.

ACTION: At your earliest convenience, please let the committee's chair,
Sen. Mark Leno, know that you oppose these anti-sunshine proposals.

3. The Haight Ashbury St. Fair 6/9 was a blast as usual. We gave
out over 500 pieces of the new SFGP literature, registered new
Greens, sold buttons--all thanks to: Rich Stone, Barry Hermanson,
new Green/Kitty Corona and friend Julia, Denise D'Anne,
Mike Murphy & Sandra Decker.
(Special thanks to Charles Byrne for designing the 2 brochures).

4. The Community College Accreditation Committee met June 5th to
decide the fate of City College SF. They kept many people out of
the meeting & won't announce their decisions until July. Careful
records were kept of this process and an official complaint about
the accreditation agency sent to the Department of Education last
month. It's 280 pages long, and the allegations are serious.
