Bringing all the players to the table Down to the Final Stretch Fundraiser for Bruce Wolfe at Gunner's Thank you everyone who has helped drop literature, spread the word, making phone calls and just the overwhelming support to help me finally get elected this time around. We are still not quite there yet. Just a little more here and there will pull us away from the pack and onto victory. I'm doing this to protect quality education, our future, the City's most important asset, City College. Fraught with controversy and conspiracy, CCSF certainly needs a major overhaul of its leadership and management. Running a citywide campaign is a daunting experience for many. It's not as difficult for Mayor, DA, Sheriff or Public Defender as they are higher profile. This is a below-the-radar position but governs the second largest property owner that can exempt itself from the local planning codes; fails to protect medical cannabis patients under city law since it is on state property; and, bulldozes their way into neighborhoods without community support to build large but needed campus facilities. This is why I am running. To save our future. The time is now. [Sustain] POWER PLANT ALERT! - This Mon. Maxwell/Peskin Forcing Pro CT 'Peaker' Legislation To Board

Hi all, In yesterday's LAFCo meeting, the newly hired contractor for Community Choice, Local Power, announced in their first report on Community Choice that they have studied the problem of the existing Mirant Potrero Hill Power Plant, and under Community Choice can fully and rapidly replace that old polluting plant with 100% clean renewable power and efficiency projects. Meanwhile, Supervisor Sophie Maxwell and Board President Aaron Peskin are using last minute cynical maneuvers to force the Combustion Turbine 'Peaker' Power Plants (or CTs) down our throats, yet again! This Monday in the Land Use Committee they will together move to pass a measure to the full Board of Supervisors (for a vote on election day when we are all busy with campaigns) that will require a strict conditional use process on all new power plants and all retrofits of existing plants EXCEPT for the CTs because they have already been approved for installation by the CEC and so are considered -neither- a new plant -nor- a retrofit! Supervisor Maxwell's aide Jon Lau has verified that this will be the effect of the legislation, and when asked by organizers to take time to meet with us to correct the legislation, he refused! Lau also admitted that the legislation could even block new renewable energy and Community Choice projects, but also refused to meet with us to discuss this issue as well! So Maxwell and Peskin are seeking to pass a measure that will block all power plants in San Francisco except for the one they want to build in the Bayview Hunters Point. They are doing this so that they can more quickly get rid of that existing power plant in Potrero Hill, so that Supervisor Maxwell's rich developer friends in Potrero Hill can double their profits on land values there, all at the expensive of the Bayview Hunters Point accepting yet another polluting fossil fuel power plant. This racist, classist, not-in-my-back-yard policy must be stopped immediately, and we must demand that if the City is going to pass legislation to make it harder to build power plants in San Francisco, that this legislation must absolutely and unequivocally force any installation of the CTs through the same strict process that all other polluting power plants will be subject to under the legislation. Show up to this Monday's hearing to speak your mind and demand accountability from Supervisors Maxwell and Peskin on their cynical pro-real-estate-developer, anti-Bayview games - and to demand no new power plants in the Bayview. The hearing is this Monday, October 27th, at 1pm, in City Hall Room 263. The hearing Item is number 6 of 13 and the Eastern Neighborhoods Plan is also on the agenda, so we should just show up on time and expect a long wait. (If you live/work near City Hall and can watch the hearing on SF Gov't Television on the web at http://sfgov.org/site/sfgtv_index.asp?id=11463 or on either cable channel 26 or 78, you might want to just watch until item 6 comes up and then go to City Hall.) Also note that item 9 is the Mayor's legislation to push a costly retrofit of the existing Mirant plant to keep it running longer, which we also decided last year to oppose. So if you can, stay for that item as well to ironically -agree- with Maxwell and Peskin that the Mayor's legislation not go forward. The debate, which will be announced Wednesday, will include at least three of the four third-party candidates — independent Ralph Nader, the Green Party's Cynthia McKinney and the Constitution Party's Chuck Baldwin. Libertarian Party nominee Bob Barr said he has a scheduling conflict, but debate organizers say he wanted to appear only with Nader. (Democratic nominee Barack Obama and Republican nominee John McCain are also invited.) Nader and Barr are on the ballot in 45 states, while the Green Party is on 31 state ballots and the Constitution Party is on the ballot in 37 states. Nader and McKinney also are on the District of Columbia ballot. Organizers say the debate is an important exercise in democracy, especially because the debates sponsored by the Commission on Presidential Debates (the last of which is Wednesday night) exclude candidates scoring below 15 percent in national polls. Hi all, The Port has approved, and the San Francisco Supervisors will soon vote on, a biofuels project which is bad news with a capital B. It will promote the worst forms of big ag biofuels projects, including the -most- environmentally damaging agriculture, factory farm animal production. We must immediately move to stop this thing in its tracks before it gets any farther. Here's an article about the project so that you can see why. Baker, A company that processes food scraps, animal parts and used restaurant grease in San Francisco now wants to turn that waste into fuel. Darling International has reached a tentative agreement with the Port of San Francisco to build a biodiesel plant on the city's southeastern waterfront. The Port Commission is scheduled to vote on the agreement today. For 38 years, Darling has run a rendering plant on Pier 92, at Amador Street, that creates tallow by processing byproducts from dairies, meatpacking facilities, butcher shops and restaurants. Darling's plant ships so much finished tallow - 21,731 liquid tons in 2007 - that the company has become the port's largest exporter. Tallow can be used to make biodiesel, a fuel that can be blended into regular, petroleum-based diesel or used on its own in vehicles with minor modifications. So Darling wants part of the pier to house a biodiesel plant capable of churning out 7.5 million to 10 million gallons each year. The project would cost roughly $7 million to $10 million. "This facility will serve as a model for cities throughout the world who aim to reduce their carbon footprint and transform their grease waste into useable, sustainable energy," said Mayor Gavin Newsom. The city government uses a blend of 20 percent biodiesel in all 1,500 of its diesel vehicles. The proposed agreement with the port, however, does not obligate the city to buy biodiesel from Darling. Biodiesel has grown in popularity during this decade's historic run-up in oil prices, which pushed the price of regular diesel above $5 per gallon this summer in California. Biodiesel can be made from multiple sources, such as soy oil or recycled restaurant grease. Under the proposal, Darling and the port also will collaborate on creating a marine fueling station at the pier, for boats that use biodiesel. Hi Bruce and all, Here is an email that I sent out in April that reveals Vote Solar's funding relationship with fossil fuel energy corporations... previously I wrote: Vote Solar just proudly announced its successful fundraising event 'Equinox 2' in which, among its major donors, were PG&E, Edison, Chevron and BP. see http://www.votesolar.org/equinox2/thank_you/ and also the previous year's Equinox fundraiser at http://www.votesolar.org/equinox/thank_you/ Vote Solar is the organization (founded by now SFPUC Commissioner David Hochschild) which also put forward the poorly written solar Prop B in 2001 for 50 mw of solar on City facilities. Prop B passed, but failed to implement because of its poor funding plan combined with the fact that the SFPUC made no effort to find a way to make it work. No solar facilities were ever built through Prop B, although Vote Solar's web site blatantly and falsely claims otherwise. Vote Solar has been one of the most vocal proponents of the Mayor's proposals. Though Hochschild is no longer with Vote Solar, he spoke and hobnobbed at the Equinox fundraiser. David Hochschild -is- however VP for External Relations for Solaria Corp., a private solar technologies company which is one of those proud new Equinox funders of Vote Solar. I didn't even notice the note on Hochschild's corporate position when I saw the press release for his appointment to the SFPUC last year, but now that I've picked up on it I'm pretty shocked. A man with that kind of energy corporation conflict of interest should not have even made it onto the SFPUC commission in the first place, and should certainly at the very least be recusing himself on all votes related to solar power funding. This all puts into even starker contrast the fact that, although Hochschild has vociferously upbraided the SFPUC staff for not creating solar and other renewables programs in San Francisco, he has never once in those tirades mentioned the massively promising Community Choice project, which would have already been out for bids long ago were it not for both constant interference from the SFPUC staff, and a resolute and total lack of support from the SFPUC commissioners themselves (including former commissioner Adam Werbach). It has become clear to me that Hochschild and is his ilk are nothing more than the next generation of private corporate developers manipulating their way into sweetheart deals for their own companies at the expense of the public good, while steering city government away from publicly owned energy projects, into cozy and corrupt 'public/private partnerships'. I would have thought that the visionary renewable energy industry could have avoided this typical, tawdry trough feeding.
