Scientists across the U.S. are voicing concerns over this proposal. _As it did with GE alfalfa, USDA failed to conduct and prepare an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) to comprehensively address all the relevant issues related to the proposed eucalyptus field trials._ Scientists at Duke University in North Carolina have created pollen models that show tree pollen traveling from a forest in North Carolina for over 1,000 kilometers northward into eastern Canada. A study published in the New Physiologist found pine pollen 600 kilometers from the nearest pines. Scientists researching sterility in trees have admitted that 100 percent guaranteed sterility in GE trees is impossible. This evidence implies that if GE trees are released into the environment, widespread and irreversible contamination of native forests cannot be prevented. _Contamination of natural trees by GE eucalyptus could pose a severe environmental threat._ Eucalyptus grow well in warm climates, so engineering them to tolerate cold temperatures removes the only barrier to their unrestricted spread. In some places where eucalyptus have been introduced, they are well known for escaping and colonizing native ecosystems. For example, eucalyptus is listed as an invasive species and a costly plant pest in California. The spread of these plants into the wild through seeds and plant matter is highly likely, and the impacts on native ecosystems from this invader are largely unknown. This would equal an 18 cents/gallon tax on gasoline. $20/ton is VERY modest, but would be a fantastic start (by contrast, the Green Party of Canada recommended a $50/ton carbon tax in last year's Canadian Federal election http://www.greenparty.ca/en/background/06.06.2007b ) What I have learned thus far is that NONE of California's major environmental groups have weighed in with COTCE on the carbon tax. What I am looking forward from all of you, is if you are personally connected to the leadership of major environmental groups in California, would you be willing to make contact with that leadership to explore whether they would be willing to send in letters of support for the carbon tax to the Commission. Hi all, Things went beautifully in the LAFCo today for Clean Power SF (CCA). The commissioners voted unanimously to hire Local Power to oversee the Clean Power SF Request For Proposals (RFP) work. Commissioner Schmeltzer was out, and so local Sierra Club director Michael Bornstein had a vote today, and also asked that Local Power be put to work under the contract immediately to assess the SFPUC's CCA process to date and give a report. The commission ok'd this move. While we have had some major setbacks and serious wounds previously, this hiring of Local Power now gives us a vital seat at the table when we didn't have one before, and may well save the CCA project. There is still a lot to do, and we will still have to be vigilant and diligent in pushing for a good clean energy project in order to actually get one, but I for one feel like a huge weight that was pinning my chest for two full years has just been completely lifted away. peace...... Lennar corporation has a long history of similar land grabs, of ongoing illegal toxic releases from its projects, and of making unwritten promises to build low income housing and hire local workers in order to justify these land grabs, only to later completely betray those promises. Ground zero of Lennar's toxic gentrification is the Bayview Hunters Point neighborhood which is over 40% African American and has a high percentage of other residents of color, as well as thousands of low income residents who depend on the Bayview's lower housing costs to enable them to continue living in, and contributing crucial cultural diversity to San Francisco. In its existing developments in the Bayview, Lennar has continuously stirred up deadly, carcinogenic asbestos dust during its shoddy operations, putting the Bayview and every resident of San Francisco at completely unnecessary risk of illness and death.
