Yay, Jane and Mothers, congratulations! Finally, I hope, the beginning of the end for nukes. I am always amazed how long it can take to come up with such logical decisions, when they do so at all. I don't see San Onofre mentioned in the order, so this decision will not affect a restart, I guess, although lots of other stuff should keep it down. Still, this is a victory that has been long in coming, so Bask, for a while, and prepare for the next round. Hi all, The coalition championing CleanPowerSF has finally succeeded in getting the SF Public Utilities Commission (SFPUC) to make a local buildout of hundreds of megawatts of renewables and efficiency the essential foundation of the program. The study and bid preparation work for this buildout will be completed by the end of 2012. (See attached the press release announcing the buildout victory and the Local Clean Energy Alliance estimate for the thousands of local jobs that this buildout will generate.) This program will run San Francisco on over 50% clean electricity by the end of the decade. IMPORTANT: FINAL CleanPowerSF VOTE IN SEPTEMBER On Wednesday September 12, legislation enacting both a small startup energy purchasing contract with Shell Energy North America, and approving the larger buildout program, will be introduced in the Board of Supervisors Budget & Finance Committee. In early September prior to that Budget and Finance hearing, we will need every possible organization and individual to contact the Board and Mayor to support the legislation. If the legislation is approved, the program will at last begin in early 2013! We are almost there. But we will need a STRONG uprising of community support. (Especially in light of the fact that a PG&E PR Executive was just made the head of the San Francisco Democratic Party.) What's at stake couldn't be more important. The CPUC has the power to close San Onofre on the grounds that it is no longer economically viable to run. Tell The California Public Utilities Commission: Don't Let Fossil Fuel Energy Corporations Hijack Our Energy Efficiency Funds! This Thursday August 2, 9am, the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) will vote on vital permissions to allow local communities to spend their own funds to greatly increase installation of energy efficiency, in order to lower electricity bills, fight the climate crisis, and provide badly needed local jobs. For decades, the monopoly fossil fuel energy corporations which control our electricity grid, PG&E, SDG&E, and Southern California Edison, have been allowed to manage these funds, which are generated from a state approved surcharge on every electricity customer's bill. But because it is not in the interest of corporations selling fossil fuel energy to get customers to buy less of that energy, the efficiency programs created under this corporate control have been wasteful and minimal. Marin County, the cities of Richmond and San Francisco, and other California cities, are now working hard to bring energy efficiency funds back to the communities and ratepayers that paid for them in the first place to engage much stronger local programs. If these communities succeed in asserting their clear right to these funds, it will set the stage for all other cities and counties in California to do the same. But the fossil energy monopolies are now putting massive lobbying pressure on the CPUC to reject local community use of energy efficiency funds. Chieko Shiina will be speaking at the Occupy Bohemian Grove protest July 14 regarding the Club's long association with Nuclear energy.
