He's way into the energy/ transpo interconnection and could talk at the Green Party GM or energy or transpo group some time. Supported Matt heavily, but not a Green. There's one bright spot: A minimal heat rise means more food production in northern regions of the world. However, the number of species going extinct rises with the heat, as does the number of people who may starve, or face water shortages, or floods, according to the projections in the draft report obtained by The Associated Press Some scientists are calling this degree-by-degree projection a "highway to extinction." It's likely to be the source of sharp closed-door debate, some scientists say, along with a multitude of other issues in the 20-chapter draft report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. While the wording in the draft is almost guaranteed to change at this week's meeting in Brussels, several scientists say the focus won't. The final document will be the product of a United Nations network of 2,000 scientists as authors and reviewers, along with representatives of more than 120 governments as last-minute editors. It will be the second volume of a four-volume authoritative assessment of Earth's climate being released this year. The last such effort was in 2001. (Volume 1: Humans 'very likely' cause warming) Andrew Weaver, a climate scientist with the University of Victoria in British Columbia, said the chart of results from various temperature levels is "a highway to extinction, but on this highway there are many turnoffs. This is showing you where the road is heading. The road is heading toward extinction." Weaver is one of the lead authors of the first report, issued in February. While humanity will survive, hundreds of millions, maybe billions of people may not, according to the chart -- if the worst scenarios happen. The report says global warming has already degraded conditions for many species, coastal areas and poor people. With a more than 90 percent level of confidence, the scientists in the draft report say man-made global warming "over the last three decades has had a discernible influence on many physical and biological systems." But as the world's average temperature warms from 1990 levels, the projections get more dire. Add 1.8 degrees Fahrenheit -- 1 degree Celsius is the calculation scientists use -- and between 400 million and 1.7 billion extra people can't get enough water, some infectious diseases and allergenic pollens rise, and some amphibians go extinct. But the world's food supply, especially in northern areas, could increase. That's the likely outcome around 2020, according to the draft. Add another 1.8 degrees and as many as 2 billion people could be without water and about 20 percent to 30 percent of the world's species near extinction. Also, more people start dying because of malnutrition, disease, heat waves, floods and droughts -- all caused by global warming. That would happen around 2050, depending on the level of greenhouse gases from the burning of fossil fuels. At the extreme end of the projections, a 7- to 9-degree average temperature increase, the chart predicts: "Up to one-fifth of the world population affected by increased flood events" ... "1.1 to 3.2 billion people with increased water scarcity" ..."major extinctions around the globe." Despite that dire outlook, several scientists involved in the process say they are optimistic that such a drastic temperature rise won't happen because people will reduce carbon dioxide emissions that cause global warming. "The worst stuff is not going to happen because we can't be that stupid," said Harvard University oceanographer James McCarthy, who was a top author of the 2001 version of this report. Castro Blasts President Bush's Bio-Fuel Plans (CBS4) HAVANA Fidel Castro has lashed out against President Bush and his plans for an increased use of U.S. bio-fuels. The article, appearing in the Communist Party daily Granma, claims that President Bush's support for using crops to produce ethanol for cars could deplete food stocks in developing nations. Many see the op- ed piece published Thursday as a sign that the 80-year-old Cuban leader is trying to take a more active role in public affairs after months sidelined by a still undisclosed illness. Castro quotes extensively from a Washington-datelined story by The Associated Press reporting on a meeting Monday between Bush and U.S. automakers and their comments about using corn to create ethanol as an alternative to fossil fuels. "The sinister idea of converting food into combustible was definitively established as the economic line of the foreign policy of the United States," he writes. The Cuban leader also notes that Cuba has also experimented with extracting ethanol from sugarcane. [Sustain] From Biofuels, To The Similar Emerging Threat Of Bio-Plastics and 'Eco-Water'

Hi all, It is finally becoming clear that bio-plastic is is beginning to be leveraged into the same agriculturally disastrous boom that was first triggered by European bio-fuel subsidies. I have just been introduced, on a Link TV 'Earth Focus' report, to disturbing new programs selling bottled spring water, often in new 'bio bottles', and using the proceeds from the water to support water 'aid' projects in economically colonized communities that are water, and/or clean water, poor. In one case, such a water 'aid' product has been bought up by Starbucks corporation, which is now donating a minuscule 5% of proceeds from this water to water 'aid'. The list of disturbing implications of these programs is too long to take time to post, (I'm sure that your imaginations can figure most of them out), but here is the central synopsis. The same big ag, chemical, fossil fuel, food, and water exploitation entities which have become increasingly merged into a handful of monolithic global parent corporations like Vivendi, Suez, Nestle, Monsanto, and Unilever, are now concertedly launching a blitzkrieg campaign of products which capitalize on the general public's desire to help save the planet, and then steer that very public into consuming an entire new spectrum of ecologically disastrous products. Products which those corporations believe they will use to seamlessly transition themselves from centrally petroleum based production, to centrally agriculturally based production, thereby ensuring that they will not have to sell one less plastic bag or bottle, one less overpriced liter of retailized water or corn syrup based soda, one less personal automobile, nor one less liter of internal combustion fuels... (Ross Mirkarimi's compostable bag ordinance, while probably a supportable positive step in microcosm, must be seen in a whole new perspective in the macrocosm, based on the emerging huge shadow of this global corporate roll-out of bio-plastics, biofuels, and cache' water products. Once Ross's ordinance passes, we -must- make certain that it evolves into a reusable canvass bag program for San Francisco.) The phrase 'out of the frying pan and into the fire' does not begin to equate the gravity of this looming situation. Just as with bio-fuels, we of the SF Greens need to immediately place ourselves at the cutting edge of the movement to fight these products, and turn the world to -real- planet saving measures like returnable glass bottles, returnable canvass bags, a massive shift to truly renewable energy sources, a massive shift to renewable powered electric mass transit, and the kicking of corporations like Starbucks, Nestle, Coca Cola, Vivendi, et al, out every watershed and aquifer on the planet - followed by organized community action to restore all of the Earth's water sources to democracy, and purity. Supervisor Ross Mirkarimi Announces Reusable Canvas Bag Giveaway and Press Conference on Plastic Bag Reduction Ordinance: SAN FRANCISCO (March 26, 2007)— Supervisor Ross Mirkarimi and the San Francisco Department of the Environment will give away free reusable canvas shopping bags at a press conference on Tuesday March 27, 2007 at 12 Noon on the front steps of City Hall. Supervisor Mirkarimi has introduced an ordinance to ban non-biodegradable plastic bags in the City’s pharmacies and grocery stores and require them to provide compostable paper or plastic bags. Passage of this legislation will make San Francisco the first City in the United States to prohibit large grocery stores and pharmacies from giving out plastic bags. Around the world, countries and municipalities have identified plastic bag over usage as a menace that is littering the streets, consuming fossil fuels, harming wildlife, and contributing to global warming. Similar bans have been implemented in South Africa, Taiwan, Bangladesh, and Paris. "You're talking about 12 million barrels of oil that are used nationally to produce 30 million plastic bags in the United States," Supervisor Mirkarimi said.
