Folks, JMC and I started planning this event at the last TWG meeting: What: summit on transportation in Mid-Market based on the three transportation points in the letter that the SFGP has endorsed When: Saturday, December 10, from 3 to 5 p.m. Where: SFGP office Purpose: Invite members of the community, alternative transportation groups, to share their ideas and hopefully to support us and create a campaign We came up with these people to serve on the panel: Dave Snyder -- Green, on board of Transportation for a Livable City (mailing, an item would go out to all its members) Jazzie -- Green, CC member, SoMa resident Dave Wilbur, who is on the Mid-Market PAC, suggested that we get April Veneracion, Angelica Cabande, or Chris Durazo (all activists in the SoMa Filipino community) to also be on the panel. He also thinks we should have Casey Mills or Sam Dogde from the Tenderloin Housing Clinic, but Casey is the one from Tenderloin Housing Clinic who's been doing transportation stuff). He also thinks it would be a could idea to get Leah from the SFBC to participate on the panel (the SFBC has a mailing, and a notice would go out to all its members ...) We want to make sure to invite people from the community and other groups to be in the audience. He suggested SPUR, SOMCAM (South of Market Community Action Network or something), Jim Meko and the South of Market Leadership Council, Sixth Street Agenda, Bindlestiff Theater, and Senior Action Network. The three transportation points are as follows: 1) There should be no more than .25 parking spaces per housing unit, and we ask that you seriously consider going lower, with the greatest share of parking spaces used for car-share vehicles; 2) There should be no above-ground parking spaces other than the minimum required for the operation of the buildings and the safety of building occupants; 3) The redevelopment plan should include funds specifically dedicated to expanding the bicycle lane network, engineering the Market Street bike lanes, and pedestrian improvements such as countdown signals at all corners within the plan area; Sue

John-Marc and I were the only ones who attended the October TWG meeting. We planned two events then -- one out of office on November 29 and another on Saturday, December 10. The Saturday, December 10 event is a summit on transportation planning for Mid-Market. We would like to hold it from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. in the GP office. (We know that's when the plenary is.) Yes, I do have a key, but I was hoping to avoid going down to the GP office that afternoon/evening, in that John-Marc lives much closer to it than I do. If John-Marc and Pat can't coordinate this, then I can definitely be at the GP office to open it up, help move the TV (which is humungous). Pat, Work out the transportation stuff with John-Marc -- he's got a key to the GP office. We'll also need voter reg stuff. I'll work with Mark Barnes on that and get him to set aside an envelope of supplies. I can get the big TV/DVD player over to the venue on that evening. Let me know what else needs to go. Downtown San Francisco's compact, high density urban character and its outstanding transit access, make it one of the best neighborhoods in the city for car-free living. Currently over half of existing residents are living in car-free households; in the mid-Market area, the proportion of car free households is close to 70%. Although an increasing number of new developments are being built with little or no parking, other development trends are threatening the long-term livability of downtown. Many new developments are parked out at suburban ratios of one parking space per unit, and the traffic generated by the thousands of new parking spaces allowed under current zoning will push downtown streets further towards gridlock, which will devastate Muni service, endanger bicyclists and pedestrians, and set back efforts to create a greener, more walkable downtown. Supervisor Daly worked with TLC on legislation to reform parking controls in San Francisco's transit-intensive C-3 (downtown commercial) districts. This legislation is the first major reform of downtown residential parking requirements in over two decades, and would extend progressive approaches to parking management enacted in small areas of downtown (Transbay and Rincon Hill) to the entire downtown. It will: * eliminate minimum parking requirements downtown; * establish a parking maximum of one space for every two units; * require that the sale or rental of parking spaces be "unbundled" from the sale or rental price of units; * eliminate size and independent accessibility requirements for parking spaces, to allow greater flexibility in configuring parking; * prohibits parking spaces on upper floors; * requires bicycle parking in residential projects; * requires car sharing spaces be set aside in larger projects; * protects major bicycle, pedestrian, and transit streets from new driveways and curb cuts. This legislation will be heard at the planning commission this Thursday, October 27. The commission will not take action at this meeting, but it is important that they hear from supporters of downtown parking reform, especially on the importance of parking maximums, which will be resisted by the more backwards developers and their lawyers and lobbyists. The meeting begins at 2pm in room 400 of City Hall; be there and speak up for a livable downtown! SF BEAUTIFUL HONORS TLC MEMBER Yesterday, San Francisco Beautiful awarded its 2005 beautification awards to eight exemplary projects (http://www.sfbeautiful.org/awards/ 2005_award_winners.html). One of the awardees was TLC member Jane Martin, who created the amazing Shotwell Greenway, on Shotwell Street between 17th and 18th streets in the Mission. Jane's project is a great illustration of how San Francisco's transportation infrastructure can be made more sustainableand more beautiful. Planning for another screening of The End of Suburbia

Hello Ross and Regina, The Transportation Working Group is planning yet another screening of "The End of Suburbia," followed by an informal discussion, this time at the Bazaar Cafe in the Richmind District. I'm going to ask the owners (Les and Makiko) if we can do this on Tuesday, November 29. We would start the DVD at 7 p.m., followed by an informal discussion that would start at about 8:40. Again, we would love to have Ross participate with Jake McGoldrick (or Matt Gonzalez, who will be invited if Jake -- or Ross -- cannot do this. Matt does a monthly Art and Politics event at this cafe). John-Marc will also do a fundraising pitch for the Green Party. Hello Everyone, JMC and I were the only people who attended the meeting tonight and we accomplished a lot. We are planning two events as follows in the minutes: TWG Meeting; October 25, 2005 Present: Sue Vaughan, JMC Agenda: 1) Mid-Market we decided to work on an event to build a campaign for the Green Partys transportation desires for Mid-Market. It will be an open discussion, led by Tom R., Dave Snyder, Leah Shahum, Emily Drennen, Angelica, Jazzi, Dave Wilbur, April Veneracion, and people from SFPO (to be recommended by Christina Olague, Bruce Wolfe, etc.) Lets let Dave Snyder (hes Green) be the lead on transportation. Invite Chris Daly. December 10, 3 to 5 p.m. in Green Party office. Plan campaign to lobby the supervisors for what we want -- based on the letter already adopted by the TWG, HLU and GM. 2) Another showing of The End of Suburbia at the Bazaar, Tuesday, November 29. a) check with owner -- Sue b) check with Jake and Ross (Matt G as an alternate) -- Sue c) JMC hauls equipment from GP office d) Christine and Sue outreach (if you have the time Christine) e) JMC -- makes pitch for donations 3) Adoption of letter from the Coalition for Transit Justice (in previous e-mail).
