Studies show that for every two jobs created by a big box store, the community loses three. (1994 report from the Congressional Research Service) If that isn't enough, Home Depot causes rainforest deforestation on a massive scale by selling high volumes of old-growth rainforest lumber at cheap prices. We believe outsiders would destroy the open and direct communication we have with our associates. SPUR on the streets bond

I need to correct a misstatement I made earlier. SPUR is neutral on the streets bond, not opposed. The ballot analysis committee voted 10 to 1 against, but the SPUR board did not achieve the 60% majority it needs to take an action, so they're neutral. Dave

Hello Everyone, Regina just confirmed with me that Ross can participate in an event on Thursday, Sept. 22 (World Car-Free Day) at the Red Vic B&B (not the movie theater). I will be in touch with the owners of the B&B to work out the details. Meantime, we need to figure out who is going to do what and who else we shold invite to participate in a panel discussion. Dave, I read the SPUR summary which recommends against the resurfacing bond on the grounds that the bond is primarily for routine maintenance and not capital projects. I would oppose even for capital projects. SPUR recommends that money for resurfacing come from a vehicle registration fee -- as San Mateo County has. Sue Please note: message attached

Thanks Sue - here is a stab at it - I would keep the first form as motivation. Whereas, the proposed Home Depot at Cortland and Bayshore would add unacceptable levels of traffic and, Whereas, this traffic would result in severe congestion, air pollution with its attendant health problems, and also safety and access problems for pedestrians, and Whereas, city-wide Public Transit would also be effected as the 24 Divisadero and the 67 Bernal Heights uses Cortland. And also the 9 San Bruno uses Bayshore, and Whereas, Home Depot promises new jobs, it will also put existing (often locally owned) small firms out of business, taking money out of the community and eliminating jobs, and Whereas, Home Depot boasts of its "Union-free" environment having no unions in its 805 stores Therefore, be it resolved that the San Francisco Green Party advise the Board of Supervisors to reject the Planning Commission's approval of Home Depot's EIR - and demand a better deal for the citizens of San Francisco.
