Hi Mark, I'll be in the office on Wednesday for the candidate forum -- can the packets be available then? Also, I have a few copies of the Transportation Plank, but it's probably better to direct people to the electronic version. I'll pick up as much as I can, and yes, there should be tables at both places for tabling. But I need BODIES, people to staff the tables. Hello Everyone, Yesterday morning I finalized plans with Sami Sunchild, the owner of the Red Vic B&B (not the theater) for our third screening of The End of Suburbia, followed by a panel discussion. Details: When: Thursday, September 22, World Car-Free Day Time: 6 p.m. the audience begins to arrive; 6:30 p.m. we begin the documentary. The event should be over by 9 p.m. Where: The Red Victorian Bed and Breakfast, 1665 Haight Street We need volunteers for the following duties: Greeting people at the doors -- 2 Making a pitch for donations -- 1, Susan King has said she'll do that; one half of what we raise will go to the Red Vic B&B, minimum of $60. Operating the DVD projector -- 1 Camera person -- 1 Arranging seats and cleaning up afterwards -- one or two people Staffing a table to do voter reg, etc. -- one or two Some people in the TWG have already said they will be available to help, but I'd like to get confirmation. Progressive taxation, those that have the ability to pay more should in fact do so. I favor the most simple and efficient system for the collection of taxes, that seems to be sales taxes. I favor increases in sales taxes, only when adequately justified and a community consensus is reached prior to placing such measures on the ballot. 12. How much will San Francisco pay out in interest costs in the current fiscal year, including its "enterprise"departments? Assuming the city has reached its statutory debt ceiling of three percent of its assessed value of property (roughly three billion dollars) and assuming a 6 percent annual interest payment on that debt, interest payments by the City and County of San Francisco would roughly translate to about $180 million dollars a year, excluding city enterprise activity that I would estimate at an additional $100 million dollars. Total interest payments range between 180 to 300 million dollars a year. Yes. For gross receipts over a certain amount, say, $1,000,000 annually, a break-point percentage applies to different level of receipts. For example, gross receipts between $1,000,000 and $5,000,000, 3% tax rate; $5,000,001 to $10,000,000, 2% tax rate; and 1% tax rate for $10,000,001 and above. An revenue / tax elasticity analysis should be done before imposing these tax rate. Additionally, different tax rates should be granted to different industry, say, a higher tax rate for tabacco industry and gas/ oil industry since these industry reap off the social capital and creates environmental concerns. 11. What are your most favored methods of raising money for San Francisco? Under what conditions would you favor sales taxes? a) Sell City and County Lottery b) Use City land lease to collect rent, support ffordable Housing for incremental transfer taxes revenues (using special revenue fund as Renter's Equity for first time home buyers as down payment). c) Sales tax increase as the last resort only if above two ways are not bringing in enough revenue for City's Budget. 12. Of the total $2 billion cash management by the Treasurer Office currently, a interest earning of $60 million per year is viable. Hi Ross and Regina, At our last TWG meeting we discussed other possible co-panelists for Ross for September 22 and came up with: Bonnie Nelson of Nelson/Nygard Leah Shahum (again -- she was great the first time) Jillian Gillette (SFBC Golden Wheel Award for her work on the San Jose/Guerrero bike lanes and traffic calming) Sue Vaughan (John-Marc suggested me, but I think I would do it only as a last resort. I'll probably moderate the event if I can find someone to be behind my camera) Nia Crowder (on the SF Environment Commission, doing lots of work on hydrogen) is another possibility that we did not discuss at our meeting. I would also like to have Dave Room, of the Post-Carbon Institute, on the panel as he has said he wants to be on the panel the next time he does this with us, but we didn't discuss him either. Obviously, we want no more than three people on the panel, but some of these people may not be able to participate. I'll probably start contacting these people tomorrow. Sue

Hi June, I've been away and responded to the first e-mail before I saw this one. This looks great. I'll come by and pick up some of the flyers and distribute them, and we'll try to get people from the TWG and/or other working groups to table at the event (perhaps Grow?). I'm going to try to be behind a camera. Sue Sue, Design Action is making a flyer for the Heinberg event and we should have a few hundred copies of the flyer here by next Thursday. Itd be good to get help getting them out so thats a way people can help. Itd be great to get GP work group and community groups who work on these issues tabling at the event. SFBikers and Car-free living advocates, In one of my lives, I work with the Thunderhead Alliance promoting best practices in bicycle and pedestrian advocacy. The Thunderhead Alliance is giving a training for advocates here in San Francisco Oct. 21-23. The training is for representatives of organizations. It costs $250 for the first registrant from an organization, $150 for subsequent registrants. You cannot sign up on your own; you must be sent by an organization. But I know enough of our local grassroots advocacy groups that they would be happy to send you if you present a cogent proposal for a volunteer-led campaign.
