Hi Christine, John-Marc, Sue, I would like to put 2 items on the agenda for our April meeting (I realize that the March meeting is already way too packed). 1. The Heinberg perspective: which would be our thoughts and some discussion of Richard Heinberg's books and articles and the Monthly Review articles I gave people some time ago. And 2. The Anti-War impasse: in which we would make an attempt to understand better the impasse in the Anti-War movement. I recognize that formally this 2nd point is outside the work we are focused on - nevertheless materially it does totally affect our work - so in this respect I think it is appropriate to talk about it. I think the discussion in the General Meeting was great - but it was only a start. Because there is so much to talk about here and because time is so limited for most of us, it might also be helpful to have some one-on-one discussions prior to this as these become possible. We will be discussing changing the date, time at our next meeting on March 10. Jeremy Nelson (TLC) is also interested and Thursday nights can be a conflict for him in that Planning Commission meetings sometimes run late. It will be good to have you on board if we can change the date, time. D5 is a good suggestion. We'll look for a venue there. We get the theater practically for free since one of the TWG people works there (Christine). And it is set up for DVDs and the theater owners like us already -- and wants the Green Party to hold monthly events there. ALso, the date may change to Tuesday March 22 -- depending on the availability of the theater. We do not want you to have a B of S meeting and then have to go to another event after that -- especially if the B of S meeting runs late. Dear Ross: The Transportation and Energy Working Groups are planning on doing a second screening of The End of Suburbia at the same location, The Off-Market Theater at 965 Mission Street. We are tentatively planning to have this second screening on Wednesday, March 23. We have invited Leah Shahum to participate, and she has confirmed. Don Eichelberger will invite Peter Camejo again also. We would also like to have you participate again if you can. This would be an opportunity for you to talk about the proposed Muni fare hikes and service cuts, alternatives to fare hikes and service cuts, your chairmanship of the LAFCO, and any additional measures you are planning to undertake regarding energy and transportation. 1) Weigh in on paying to walk across the Golden Gate Bridge? THe Golden Gate Bridge District is proposing that pedestrians and cyclists pay a fee to cross the bridge. WHat do you think? According to Walk SF: Given the wear caused by a SUV vs. the wear caused by walker or cyclist, an equitable charge would be 10 cents for a walker and $80,000 for a SUV! (Thanks to member John Holtzclaw for this information.) Please write a letter this week to the Board of Directors of the GG Bridge, Highway & Transportation District at mailto:bridgecomments@goldengate.org. 2. Isn't Walking Good for the Air? To express your opinion on funding for pedestrian projects for clean air, send a message to both Sharon Jackson at the Air District: sjackson(a)baaqmd.gov and Jose Luis Moscovich at the Transportation Authority: jose_luis_moscovich(a)sfcta.org. San Francisco Still Not Prosecuting Those Who Kill > Pedestrians: You can now be fined for smoking a cigarette in a park but you can still get away with killing a pedestrian in a crosswalk. It has been two months since Beverly Kees was struck and killed while crossing in a crosswalk. Still no charges have been filed against the driver. Since that horrible incident, two other women have been killed in crosswalks in San Francisco. Again, no charges have been filed by the San Francisco District Attorney's office. Meanwhile in Oakland charges were filed after just 11 days for a recent similar situation. Why can Oakland protect its walkers while San Francisco coddles dangerous behavior? Walk SF will continue to push the DA's office to file manslaughter charges when a driver is at fault for killing a pedestrian. 4. Help Plan a more livable Valencia Street The Department of Parking and Traffic's Traffic calming Program is having its second meeting to plan pedestrian safety improvements on Valencia Street. These improvements would be integrated into a street resurfacing project coming up in the next two years. TLC would like to see Valencia become a 'complete street', with better amenities for bicyclists, pedestrians, and transit riders, as well as better lighting and more street trees. Some of the ideas that came up at the December meeting include wider sidewalks, landscaped medians, and improved bike lanes. Come share your ideas on Thursday February 24, 2005, 6:30-8:30 PM, at the Mission Police Station Community Room on Valencia Street at 17th Street. Transportation Authority Public Meeting - Tuesday February 22 Share your thoughts on how we should spend Proposition K funds with the Transportation Authority on Tuesday, February 22 from 4 pm to 7 pm. WalkSF's main message to the TA is that we want a true, community-based process for a Pedestrian Master Plan. Call us at 431-WALK for details. 8. Making Treasure Island Walkable The Treasure Island Development Authority (TIDA), in negotiations with TICD (the proposing master developer) is in the process of developing the Transportation Plan for Treasure and Yerba Buena Islands. Walk SF has a chance to help make the islands truly walkable by working to assure adequate and unobstructed sidewalk widths, safe street crossings, and the incorporation of "Safe Routes to School." Walkathon in the Bayview on April 30 Mark your calendars now for a fund- and fun- raising event on Saturday morning, April 30. Keep Writing, Talking and Sticking Flyers on Cars Do you ever get discouraged about the uphill struggle to create a walkable city? Are you frustrated when people who park on the sidewalk glare at you when you ask them to move? Well, changing public opinion is a slow process, but we keep at it, and we are making progress. Every time a WalkSF member writes a letter to the editor, tells a driver to stop for a pedestrian, or lets someone know that it is NOT OK to park a car on the sidewalk, we are moving public opinion one inch in the right direction. Hello Everyone, I talked to Jeremy Nelson (Transportation for a Livable City) today and these are the meetings/events that he told me about: 1) MTA hearing, 4 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 14, Room 400, City Hall. Another chance to encourage the Board of Directors to raise parking fees and fines, etc., instead of raising Muni fares and cutting service; 2) Sierra Club members, meeting a 85 2nd Street, second floor, to discuss endorsing the Platform for Transit Justice. The meeting will be between 6 p.m. and 8 p.m., time not yet determined. Contact John Rizzo at: "john rizzo" <jrizzo(a)sprintmail.com>; 3) Rescue Muni members -- same thing. Meeting on Wednesday night at 6 p.m., SPUR, 312 Sutter. Stuart Sunshine will be presenting the MTA budget. If you are a member, you can go and encourage RM to take a stand against fare hikes and service cuts. 4) Department of Public Health event on Wednesday, 9 a.m. at 1500 Mission Street at 11th. I'm not sure what this is called but DPH folks will be discussing what a healthy neighborhood is a health impact assessment of neighborhoods that are built in such a way that walking and bicycling are encouraged. Ultimately DPH would like to see such concerns incorporated into planning processes and altering the way CEQA is currently applied. I will be going to the MTA hearing. I doubt I will get to the Sierra Club meeting, and I will not be going to the RM meeting before the GM in that the Coalition for Transit Justice has a meeting at 5:30 p.m. Sue __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Fare increases, service cuts, and parking fee and fine increases have been proposed to address the gap. Rescue Muni has already taken a position in favor of higher parking fees and fines to reduce the need for service cuts, as well as longer-term revenue measures such as an increase in the parking tax, but we would like to give our members a more detailed briefing on what is facing Muni this year.
