Funds Needed for SFGP Slate Card

Hello Fellow Greens, Your SFGP is mailing a slate card to all registered Greens in San Francisco, but we need your help to cover printing and postage costs! As you know, this is a very exciting election year for the San Francisco Green Party. We have no less than 8 Green Party candidates that have our endorsement this year. Right now, our volunteers are putting the finishing touches on a slate card with all of our endorsements for November 2, 2004. The slate card will include all of our endorsed candidates, as well as our positions on local and state ballot initiatives. Our intention is to mail this slate card to all of the registered Greens Party members in San Francisco. This involves a citywide mailing to nearly 15,000 Greens. To help cover the costs of this mailing, we are asking our supporters to please help us by making a donation to the San Francisco Green Party. These contributions are absolutely necessary in order to fulfill our goal of mailing to all registered Greens in San Francisco. They want to restrict our options to just two candidates for the November general election, even if those two candidates are both from the same political party. And that party doesn't even have to be the party that receives the most votes in the primary election. Here's an example of the madness they're proposing. Suppose two Republicans run in the primary, and they receive 20% and 19% of the vote. Suppose four Democrats run, and they receive 18%, 17%, 15%, and 11%. Incredibly, under 62, only the two Republicans would advance to the general election, even though their combined total is just 39%, while the Democrats, who received 61%, would be completely shut out. Individual billionaires associated with the following companies paid at least $50,000 each for the qualifying signatures for Prop. 62: Broad & Kaufman, the Gap, Wesco Financial, Paramount Farms, and Berkshire Hathaway; Countrywide Home Loans paid $350,000. No other state, other than Louisiana, uses this voting scheme. Don't let the billionaires fool you on this one. They're trying to confine our November election choices to just two well-financed candidates who will serve their narrow pro big business interests. Vote No on Proposition 62. GO MATT GO! Hello Fellow Greens, In this update: 1. News 2. Volunteer Mobilizations 3. Events NEWS: We have received some good news! The U.S. Supreme Court has accepted an 11th hour appeal by Green Party congressional candidate Terry Baum and has ordered San Francisco elections officials to explain why they did not count hundreds of Primary Election write-in votes and place Baum on the November ballot. The nation's highest court has now given San Francisco until October 27 to respond to Baum's writ of certiorari filed September 2. If Baum wins, the city may have to reprint hundreds of thousands of ballots to include Baum as a candidate in the 8th District, currently held by House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi. Terry will be talking about the status of the case at an event on October 5. See Events section for details. http://www.terrybaum.com Matt Gonzalez and Mark Sanchez held a press conference on Friday, October 1 to defend Police Commissioner Peter Keane, who drew fire from the Police Officers Association this week. The Police Commission meets each Wednesday. Green Party members are encouraged to attend these meetings as an ongoing effort to support efforts for police accountability in San Francisco. We also passed a consent calendar item at our last meeting to support the Unite HERE Local 2 hotel workers strike, which has received wide media coverage. The San Francisco School Board voted unanimously to endorse Proposition F last Tuesday. School Board member Mark Sanchez and Mixed Greens Chair Berta Hernandez were seen on television news coverage of the issue. David Cobb was on KQED-FM on Tuesday morning.
