As a young man, he migrated to the United States from Puerto Rico, in search of a better life, and the "American dream." Instead, he lived the American "nightmare" as an innocent man who spent almost eighteen years on Florida's death row. But through his faith, the unwavering support of his mother, and the compassion of his fellow death row inmates who taught him to speak, read and write English, he survived. Sadly, Mr. Melendez's story is far from unique. Since his release from death row on January 3, 2002, he became the 99th death row inmate in the country to be released on the basis of innocence since 1973. Ever since his release, without hatred or bitterness, he has been sharing his remarkable story with thousands of people throughout the country and abroad. Although his story highlights the many problems of the death penalty system (such as its high risk and inevitability of being imposed on innocent people, its unfairness on the basis of race and socio-economic status, and its exorbitant economic costs) it is also a multi-dimensional story that educates, energizes and inspires at multi-dimensional levels and profoundly impacts people all across the political spectrum. Another aspect of the bill will have a conservation component to help restore and monitor the salmon of the Klamath River. The reason for the dramatically shortened salmon season is because the Klamath River will not meet the 35,000 natural spawner floor for fall-run chinook for the third consecutive year. The reported result will likely be a near closure of Oregon and California's commercial ocean, in-river Klamath and tribal fisheries for 2006. The impacts on the California coastal economy from last year's season, which was cut by 60-percent due to poor Klamath River returns, combined to a near closure of this year's season, would be catastrophic and could very likely have permanent affects on the salmon fishing industry and related businesses in both states. The declining salmon populations in the Klamath River basin are due not to over fishing by tribes, the commercial salmon fishing industry or recreational anglers; but federal mismanagement of the Klamath River system which hurt both farmers and fishermen. This mismanagement led to the fish kill in 2002 when up to 78,000 adult salmon died on the Klamath River. It also led to the outbreak of Ceratomyxa Shasta (C. Shasta) which has reportedly infected 80-percent of juvenile salmonids. Mortality from C. Shasta is 100-percent. The new Israeli government, with the full backing of Washington,has announced its intention to vastly increase settlements in the West Bank and to illegally annex much of the land. Since April 2005, several independent international activists have made regular visits to the neighborhood of Tel Rumeida, Hebron, in the occupied West Bank. Hence, this documentary "The Case of Tel Rumeida." Tel Rumeida is a small neighborhood widely known for housing the most violent and racist faction of the Israeli settler movement. Palestinian families who live directly next to these settlers are often virtual prisoners in their homes and subject to the settlers violent attacks and destruction of property. The 400 fascist settlers, protected by thousands of Israeli troops, control 20% of the city of Hebron, home to 160,000 Palestinians. After meeting many of the Palestinian families in Tel Rumeida, documenting the circumstances in which they are forced to live, and experiencing the settlers violence, the international activists began to develop the foundations to begin a permanent international presence in Tel Rumeida. DETAILS: Don Walsh (HON61, Explorers Medalist'01) is a retired naval deep submersible pilot (the first), a Ph.D. Oceanographer who has taught and written over 200 publications, has worked in the Arctic and Antarctic on over 50 expeditions, is a member of the National Academy of Engineering, has travelled to over 112 nations, served in two wars, graduated from the Naval Academy and Texas A&M and was born in Berkeley. In 2001, he was cited as one of the great explorers in the Life Magazine book, The Greatest Adventures of All Time. With Jacques Piccard he dove Trieste to the deepest place in the World Ocean: 35,840 feet. While still on earth these two men were farthest from sea level than any others, ever. The feat has never been duplicated. This evening's talk will describe the 12-14 hour dives to those famous shipwrecks, and what it was like to enjoy a modest box lunch while sitting on the decks of these ships. It is interesting to know that these dive programs were for paying tourists. In the past seven years nearly 80 have made the two-mile trip down to Titanic and about 12 to Bismarck. A brief history of each ship's loss will be given to provide a context for the diving operations. Don will even tell you how anyone can join these expeditions. And an entire Wyoming town goes into business for itself after it is abandoned by its one chain department store. Along the way, their conversations with corporate executives, economists, entrepreneurs, political leaders, union members, and ordinary Americans from all walks of life lead Hosein and Hughes to conclude that a healthy democracy needs local small businesses if it is to control ever-growing corporate power. Local 2 members were locked out by the Fairmont for 53 days and currently are engaged in a long-standing, nearly 2-year boycot of the Hotel--the boycott is still on. It's tough to move an event at the last minute, but it's critical that queer community groups hold the line on the boycott.
