Events NEWS: Cobb and Camejo Debate Potential Green Party presidential nominee David Cobb and Ralph Nader's running mate Peter Camejo participated in a debate over Green strategy in the 2004 elections on Democracy Now. Ralph Nader's pick of Peter Camejo as a running mate also got lots of coverage, with mentions on the NBC Nightly News, the ABC's World News Tonight, and The Daily Show with Jon Stewart. EVENTS: Saturday, June 26 Join Green Party Congressional candidate Terry Baum at the DYKE MARCH! There will be a Baum for Congress contingent, and all women are welcome to join us in Dolores Park for the rally and the march. We'll have a table at 19th Street and Dolores, starting at 3 PM. The Saturday night Super Rally will be aired on C-Span channel 23 beginning at 5:30 PM local time. For the latest convention news, visit http://gp.org/convention/. Saturday and Sunday, June 26 & 27 LGBT Pride Weekend Our location in the Parade line-up has changed slightly. We are now contingent #158. We will meet in area "L", on Beale Street between Folsom and Bryant. We will still gather on Sunday at 11:00am, and begin marching sometime between 11:30 and 1:00. If you are late, and you can't find us on Beale Street, the best bet is to wait at the corner of Market and Main, and ask a blue-shirted safety monitor to let you into the parade route as we pass (giving them our contingent number will help). There is also an accessibility tent at Market and Main, for those who need a comfortable place to wait for the parade to start. For those who haven't done this before, keep in mind that we will be standing or marching for several hours in whatever weather San Francisco throws at us that day. It's a good idea to bring a hat, sunscreen, layers of clothing, water and a snack. Our booth will still be located on Larkin between Fulton and McAllister, across from the Asian Art Museum. Monday, June 28 Help Renee Saucedo gather signatures at Fahrenheit 9/11 House Parties! House Parties for Fahrenheit 9/11 "Virtual Town Meeting" with Michael Moore are being held all over San Francisco (and the nation) at 7 PM. Green Party candidate for Supervisor in District 9 Renee Saucedo is organizing volunteers to get signatures for her at these events. There are more than 200 people registered for this event at Valencia Street Books! Please be there by 6:30 if you want to talk to folks on their way in. There are lots of other house parties in District 9 as well. Wednesday, June 30 Strategy session with Matt Gonzalez will be held from 6:30 - 7:30 PM at the SFGP office. He will talk about various topics, including the 2004 presidential race. Wednesday, June 30th Come help launch a broad coalition of labor, community groups, churches, elected officials, citizens and immigrants to pass the Immigrant Voting Rights initiative in the November 2004 election. The meeting will be held from 5:30-7:30 PM at the Instituto Familiar de La Raza, located at 2919 Mission Street @ 26th Street. Introduced by Board of Supervisors President Matt Gonzalez -- and supported at this time by Supervisors Ammiano, Daly, Maxwell, McGoldrick, and Sandoval -- the measure will extend the right to vote in school board elections to all parents with children in San Francisco public schools, regardless of citizenship. The initiative will empower the parents of one-third of our children in public schools to have a saying as how their children are educated.. July 23, 24, and 25 The Annual Northern California Green Campout All Greens are invited to join us for our annual social gathering in the Sly Park Recreation Area, Pollock Pines, California (up hwy 50 in El Dorado County). You can join us for all three days or any portion thereof. No reservations needed. Arrive at main gate, and tell them you're with the Green Party at Dogwood camp. This is a large campsite at the back of a large lake (9.5 miles around). The campsite is in a tall pine forest at 4000 feet elevation, and is bordered on the back by only the El Dorado National Forest. Activities include swimming, hiking, boating/canoeing-BYO boat or canoe, and a voluntary fireside joke-fest. Sound like fun? We have endorsed Green candidate Renee Saucedo in the District 9 Supervisor race! Green Party activist Christina Olague has been nominated to the Planning Commission. Renee is a long time community activist who is very well-known in the community. She is running a strong campaign, and we are happy to giver her our support. Monday, June 21 The Board of Supervisors Rules Committee will hold a hearing at 11 AM (City Hall, 2nd Floor Supervisor Chambers) on a proposal to restructure the Rent Board Commission. The proposal would give tenants 2/3 of the seats on a 7 member Board and to give the Supervisors 4 of the 7 appointments (and approval power over the Mayor's appointments). Currently, Mayor Newsom gets to appoint all of the Rent Board Commissioners and tenants get only 40% of the seats, even though we make up 66% of the city! Monday, June 21 Campaigns and Issues Working Group will be putting together an Education Questionnaire for School Board and Community College candidates. Meeting will be held from 7 - 9 PM at the SFGP office, 1028 A Howard Street, between 6th and 7th Streets in San Francisco. Wednesday, June 23 Citywide Energy Planning Meeting from 5 - 7 PM at the Bayview Opera House, located at 4075 Third Street in San Francisco. Jared Blumenfeld, Director of the Department of Environment invites you to a meeting to discuss the efficiency and renewable energy efforts of the Department of Environment. Help us figure out how we can best run a successful campaign to win the School Board for the benefit of our City's future leaders, our children. Thursday, June 24 The SFGP Housing and Land Use Seminar Series Presents: Building Housing in San Francisco: A For Profit Developers Perspective. The seminar will be held from 7 - 9 PM at the New College of California, located at 777 Valencia Street, between 18th and 19th Streets in San Francisco. Teresa Ojeda of the San Francisco Planning Department will moderate the seminar. This month's workshop features Marc Babsin of the Emerald Fund, one of the city's prominent real estate developers, and Debra Stein, who has an extensive background working with local communities and political groups to shepherd projects through the planning process. Marc will give us his insights about the issues facing developers when they try to build housing in San Francisco. Debra will share her expertise in bridging differences among competing interests during the development process. The issues facing for- profit developers are something we don't talk much about in the Green Party or in other progressive circles, and we're looking forward to hearing their perspectives. In other important news, Green Party Congressional candidate Terry Baum will finally get her day in court on June 15, and the Campaigns and Issues Working Group is looking for new co-chairs. Details are below. The agenda for our next SFGP general meeting, to be held Wednesday June 16, is posted at the bottom of this email. SFGP General Meeting Agenda NEWS: In the US, Greens have won 44% of elections in which they have run so far this year; the party has grown by 30% since 2000; Greens hold more than 200 elected offices across the country. Our own Ross Mirkarimi, Co-Founder of the Green Party of California and current candidate for District 5 Supervisor, was named one of 15 national "rising stars", and won an award for "General Excellence" from the Campaigns & Elections magazine. The Campaigns and Issues Working Group is seeking co-chairs. All Greens are welcome to inquire about this position. GREEN PARTY OF CALIFORNIA SEEKS PRESS SECRETARY The Green Party is the fastest growing third party in the United States, with California being the largest member state. The Green Party of California seeks a Media Relations Staff Member with a history in progressive politics, good writing, editing, and speaking skills, as well as a keen entrepreneurial ability to increase media exposure for the Green Party of California. The ideal candidate should be well organized and detail-oriented, comfortable with tight deadline pressure, possess strong computer skills and have a minimum of 3 years of experience working primarily in the news media, but those working in publicity or media relations also are urged to apply. Due to the potentially sensitive nature of this position, the Green Party of California's personnel policy requires that the eventual hire be a member of the Green Party of California. This is a paid part-time contract position. Please submit your completed responses to the requested information below to highdesertgreens(a)verizon.net. Deadline for applications is June 16, 2004. EVENTS: Saturday, June 12 Join Matt Gonzalez and the Green Party for a party at the 848 Community Space, located at 848 Divisadero Street near Fulton in San Francisco. (For MUNI riders, take either the 24 Divisadero or the 5 Fulton bus lines.) The party will be held from 8 - 11:30 PM, and will include food, wine, music, beer and fun, with a $5 suggested donation at the door, but no one turned away for lack of funds. Matt will discuss his latest perspective, "The American City: A Tool for Progressive Change in the 21st Century", which will be featured at a future Housing and Land Use seminar workshop. Dave Snyder will give a short talk about the relationship of land use and bicycling. Judge Quidachay is scheduled to preside, and Terry is inviting her supporters to show up in court to show support. Please get there early; we need observers there at 8:45 AM. Terry Baum is the Green Party's Congressional candidate for District 8, the seat currently held by House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi. Accredidation will be handled by same team as last month; get your voting card as you come in. Anybody who's not on the active member list but thinks they should be can make a brief statement followed by a vote of the active members - 2/3 required to be added to active list. 3) Consent calendar items are given below. There is no time allocated for questions. Concerns mean the item is pulled and rescheduled at a future meeting. 4) Consensus or an 80% threshold is required to send the letter. Text of the letter is given at the end. 5) Early endorsement process: we will only consider early endorsement of ONE Green candidate in D9 at this meeting. D5 endorsements and strategy will not be considered at this meeting! We will first take a straw poll to see which candidate to consider. Only Green candidates who have filed, answered or questionnaire, and asked for our endorsement qualify. So far, that's just Lucrecia Bermudez and Renee Saucedo. If another candidate qualifies by Wednesday, the straw poll will include a runoff if no candidate gets 50%+1. We'll poll active members which of the 2 candidates to consider endorsing. You can vote only for one candidate, or not at all; abstentions do not count in this straw poll. We'll then go into a full consensus proposal on the leading candidate. (Clarifying questions, Concerns & Affirmations, Concerns may propose friendly amendments or be asked to stand aside, possible vote). If we vote, the threshold for endorsements is 75% of the yes and no votes. People can also abstain, but the proposal fails if the number of abstentions is greater than 25% of the total yes and no votes. People can also choose not to vote or abstain, in which case they aren't counted. Clarification of what an early endorsement means: The endorsement will allow for use of GP resources, including: non-fundraising lists, use of website, access to office and equipment (rent for use of office as campaign office), inclusion in all outreach to voters (slate cards, phonebanking, etc.). We will do another consideration of D9 candidates including non-Greens and do IRV ranking following the August 6th filing deadline. 6) We'll consider all 3 at once, with consensus or a 2/3 vote required to confirm. If this fails, all 3 will be considered individually. 9) Transportation will present a plank; concerns may be raised over the next month, but the decision will be made at the next GM. Consent calendar items (item 3): a) This would allow non-citizens with parents in the SF schools to vote in school board elections. Mixed Greens recommends endorsing this. b) This legislation would create an "open primary" for all statewide offices. Only the top 2 candidates, regardless of party, would advance to the general election. This would effectively prevent Greens from running candidates in these races, and it's the same system by which David Duke made a runoff in Louisiana. The GPCA CC and Electoral Reform WG recommend endorsing NO on this. Letter from Mixed Greens (item 4): To: San Francisco Board of Supervisors From: Mixed Greens RE: Appointments to Commissions Given the controversy of recent appointments to City Commissions, the Mixed Greens, the people of color caucus of the San Francisco Green Party, urges the Board of Supervisors to adopt the following procedures for appointments affecting communities of color and immigrants: 1. When appointments for City Commissions impacting the lives and interests of communities of color and immigrants are up for discussion and vote the BOS will do everything in its power to consult and receive input from the communities affected by the appointments. 2. We strongly support the BOS convening public hearings and town hall meetings in communities of color and immigrant communities to discuss and receive the input of those affected communities. 3. Public hearings and town hall meetings should be organized with sufficient outreach to community organizations, churches, etc., to guarantee full participation from the community. Community-based and faith-based organizations that already have established relationships in the community and other outreach tools should be used to ensure attendance at these events. These hearings should be organized at times and dates to allow for full public participation, i.e. not during typical work day hours. Budgets for these meetings should include child care providers, translation services and audio-visual recording. 4. Supervisors should make every effort to attend meetings the community has already established. This is an opportunity to reach voters who may otherwise not participate in any political forum. Meetings are organized by various groups throughout each district and afford an opportunity to discuss open seats and possible appointments. We hope these suggestions are earnestly considered and implemented in a timely manner. We acknowledge there are existing time and budget constraints; however, we believe engaging the community in determining its civic leadership is a significant responsibility of a district supervisor. We appreciate the service you are providing to our beautiful city and are available to provide any assistance should it be needed or requested. Hello Fellow Greens, In this update: 1. News 2. Events NEWS: Pro-War Congressman Tom Lantos was uninvited to the commencement ceremony at City College of San Francisco last week. Pat Gray, our Green Party candidate who is challenging Mr. Lantos in the 12th Congressional District, said in response to this development, "Our youth, who are our promise for the future, are dying for a lie. Lantos' support of the occupation of Iraq and Palestine needs to be challenged like this. We need to bring the troops home and end this nightmare now." On June 15, Superior Court presiding judge Ronald E. Quidachay is scheduled to hear the case at 9:30 AM in Room 302 at the Hall of Justice. Read the press release on her web site, www.terrybaum.com. San Francisco Biotech and G8 Mobilization Come and take part in the many educational forums and protest opportunities related to the genetic modification of crops and a range of other trade issues. This month's art opening will present works by local artist Jose Lerma. We are wishing Matt Gonzalez a happy and joyous birthday, as he celebrates his 39th on this day. Monday, June 7 Campaigns and Issues Group will meet at 7 PM to discuss: -early endorsement of Green Party candidates in D-5, D-9 -Community College Board and School Board -recommendation on whether the SFGP should endorse the initiative to allow non-residents vote in school board elections -questionnaires for Community College and School Board -suggested schedule for forums for the endorsement process -recommendation on whether the SFGP will endorse the recall for District 10 The Campaigns and Issues Working Group is also looking for nominations for co-chairs. The meeting will be held at the SFGP office at 1028 Howard Street, between 6th and 7th Streets in San Francisco. Monday, June 7 Because We're Worth It! Campaign for Safe Cosmetics This is a national campaign that is working to eliminate carcinogens, mutagens, and reproductive toxicants from cosmetics and personal care products. In February 2003, the European Union passed a new law called the Cosmetics Directive 76/768/EEC that prohibits the use of known or suspected carcinogens, mutagens and reproductive toxins (a.k.a. CMRs) from cosmetics. By September 2004, cosmetics sold in European Union countries must be free of these CMR chemicals, including two phthalates, DEHP and DBP. The Campaign for Safe Cosmetics is asking cosmetics companies to make these safer products available in all the markets worldwide where they sell their products. The Breast Cancer Fund is hosting this event, which will take place from 6:00 - 8:30 PM at The Women's Building, located at 3543 18th Street in San Francisco. Friday, June 11th Meet Lavender Green Candidates and Help Us Honor Harvey Milk The San Francisco Lavender Greens invite you to a FABULOUS house party and fundraiser for the memorial to Harvey Milk at City Hall! Enjoy good food and drink & great entertainment--and meet some of the Lavender Greens who are running for office this November. Featured speakers include Terry Baum, candidate for U.S. Congress; and incumbent School Board member Mark Sanchez, currently running for re-election. Other speakers and entertainers TBA. Location: 39 Hartford Street, between 17th and 18th. Time: 8 PM - midnight. Suggested donation: $10, no one turned away for lack of funds. Saturday, June 12 Join Matt Gonzalez and the Green Party for a party at the 848 Community Space, located at 848 Divisadero Street near Fulton in San Francisco. (For MUNI riders, take either the 24 Divisadero or the 5 Fulton bus lines.) The party will be held from 8 - 11:30 PM, and will include food, wine, music, beer and fun, with a $5 suggested donation at the door, but no one turned away for lack of funds. Matt will discuss his latest perspective, "The American City: A Tool for Progressive Change in the 21st Century", which will be featured at a future Housing and Land Use seminar workshop. Dave Snyder will give a short talk about the relationship of land use and bicycling. DJ's mx:d (Tranquility Base, 26 Mix) and Paul Platt spin the tunes, and we hope to have a few other surprises.
