Hello Fellow Greens, Campaign season is upon us, and at our special General Meeting on August 25th we endorsed Green Party member Jane Kim (www.janekim.org) and progressive Democrat Eric Mar for School Board. There is one endorsement slot left in this race, as four seats are up for election. We have already endorsed incumbent Green Mark Sanchez (http://www.marksanchez.org) We also endorsed some ballot measures, though there are plenty more to still be decided. Hello Fellow Greens, It has been an exciting week! We have now endorsed 3 Green Party candidates for District 5 Supervisor. The endorsement was given in a ranked choice, instant runoff-voting (IRV) style. IRV is an important electoral reform that is supported by the Green Party. It will be used for the first time in San Francisco this November. IRV will allow voters to rank their top three candidate choices on the ballot. The endorsement was issued as follows: 1. Events TERRY BAUM UPDATE: Terry Baum, Green Party candidate for Congressional District 8, is still fighting to get on the ballot. Her attorney had filed a Writ of Mandate, but it was summarily dismissed without opinion by the First District Court of Appeal on August 11. A Petition for Hearing to the California Supreme Court will be filed on Monday, August 23. The campaign pledges to keep fighting on behalf of Green Party voters' constitutional rights! The state Coordinating Committee was considering a proposal to call a special General Assembly in order to discuss changing our Presidential Nominee from David Cobb to Ralph Nader. The proposal was rejected, but not before the news media got wind of the issue. The story was covered in the San Francisco Chronicle, USA Today, Associated Press and the Sacramento Bee. Before the final vote, Peter Camejo and David Cobb debated on KPFA-FM's morning show, on Tuesday August 10. http://www.kpfa.org/archives/ The race for District 5 Supervisor has been making headlines. Matt Gonzalez has endorsed Green candidate Ross Mirkarimi. TERRY BAUM UPDATE: Terry Baum filed a Writ of Mandate, which is a kind of emergency appeal, at the California Appellate Court on Monday, asking to have her contested write-in votes counted, which would cause her to be put on the ballot as the Green candidate for Congress in District 8. She has asked the court to render an opinion by Monday, August 16. The case was assigned to a reasonably liberal panel of judges. Terry hopes that this will be the final stage of a long, absurd journey in search of Democracy in San Francisco. www.terrybaum.com "OWN YOUR OWN PRECINCT" PROJECT FOR PAT GRAY: The Pat Gray Campaign will be meeting every Saturday and Sunday at its campaign office to go out as a group to precinct walk in different cities. The office is at 212A Miller Avenue in South San Francisco, just a short block west of 101 and the train tracks. Come by at 10 AM to pick up the materials. The campaign is also launching the "Own Your Own Precinct" project, in which volunteers will walk their neighborhood some time before November 2. Events TERRY BAUM NEWS: Just 5 months ago, this newsletter was celebrating the write-in victory of Green Congressional Candidate Terry Baum. But her efforts to get on the ballot have been repeatedly stalled, and last week there was more bad news. Judge Quidachay ruled that Terry Baum cannot have her name placed on the November ballot. Terry's attorney is continuing legal efforts to get her name on the ballot, but the court decision was a major setback. Baum will be a write-in candidate regardless of court decisions. The speakers will go to community groups and give a short 10-minute presentation about IRV in San Francisco. The talk will be scripted, with each part cued by visual flash cards. A speakers training and materials will be provided. A Volunteer Coordinator is also needed.
