Without a Green challenge to the Democratic Party, the San Francisco election could have been a disaster. But thanks to a campaign that relied on a coalition of environmentalists and labor, voters were convinced that public transit trumps private vehicles, even when the opposition muddled the campaign with a bogus proposition. The panel will discuss the ramifications of Proposition A's approval, with the transfer of authority to the Municipal Transportation Agency and failed Proposition H, which would have increased crowded downtown traffic. Here is some basic information on how to become a delegate to the National Green Party Nominating Convention. The SF Green Party will consider the list of potential BACK-UP delegates (see below for more details) to the National Nominating Convention at our next General Meeting on Wednesday, November 28, 2008. There will be an election re-cap from 7:00-8:30 and the regular meeting will immediately follow. The Green Party's Nominating Convention is July 10-13, 2008 in Chicago, IL. There MAY BE some scholarships, stipends and travel assistance funds, but these are extremely limited and delegates are encouraged to find ways to fund their own travel. The final number of California delegates to the national nominating convention are not yet set; each region within California will be allocated delegates by Green voter registration within the region. Anyone interested in being a delegate is encouraged to contact the Presidential candidate of their choice and ask to be added to the delegate slate. A list of Presidential candidates appearing on California's ballot and contact information is forthcoming. California delegates to the 2008 convention will be selected first from lists submitted by presidential candidates. All candidates for the Green Party's Presidential nomination are encouraged to recruit a list of potential California delegates, which will be sorted by region. Delegates will be selected in proportion to the votes that candidate receives in each region. If a candidate receives 10% of the vote, they may send up to 10% of the delegation from that region (so if the SF delegation is 20 and a candidate gets 10%, that candidate may send the top two delegates from her or his list). Per California Green Party State Bylaws, potential delegates may only approach one candidate. In the event that there are still vacancies in the delegation, the California Greens are collecting lists from each region of potential back-up Delegates. PLEASE NOTE THAT GETTING ON THIS LIST IS NOT A GUARANTEE THAT YOU WILL BE A DELEGATE. This is a back-up list to ensure that California sends a full delegation to the nominating convention. The County Council of the San Francisco Green Party established the following guidelines at our recent County Council meeting. All elected and appointed officials will be added to the list of potential back-up delegates. County Council members may opt to be included in this list. All registered members of the SF Green Party are invited to apply for delegate status if they are interested. The SFGP Delegate list must be at least 50% female, and 30% people of color.
