Dear Greens, We started making our Fall endorsements at our June monthly meeting, and we'll continue for the next few months. Please join us at our monthly meeting this Wednesday: Time: Wednesday, Jul 25, 7-9 pm Location: El Cafetazo, 16th St between Mission and Valencia, 94110 Agenda: This month, we'll continue making endorsements: 4 remaining state propositions (props 30 and 38 - 2 education taxes, prop 35 - human trafficking, and prop 31 - budget cycle), as well as local propositions and candidates in partisan races. The SF Green Party has endorsed Prop 37, which would require GMO labeling). Ever wondered what's in your food? Approximately 75% of processed foods in the US contain GMOs - also known as genetically modified organisms, or genetically engineered foods - and most of us us eat these on a daily basis without even knowing it. There will be a panel discussion on the erosion of civil liberties and what to do. Renewal of the 2012 National Defense Authorization Act, allowing indefinite detention without charge, is being debated this summer. Under the 2012 NDAA, the government can arrest you without charges, hold you indefinitely without trial, deny you a lawyer, and send you abroad to be imprisoned or tortured, based only on suspicion of association with terrorist groups. Dear Greens, We'll be celebrating Independence Day in our usual fashion, by campaigning and registering voters at the SF Mime Troupe's opening week in Dolores Park! Join us Wednesday July 4, as well as Saturday and Sunday (July 7-8). If you want to help, meet us at 18th and Church at 12:30 pm on all 3 days. We'll set up a sign and table on the hill overlooking the event, and stay through the end of each performance (around 4 pm). We'll have petitions and information on important November campaigns, including the GMO labeling initative, a veto of the Board of Supervisors' decision to build more housing for millionaires, and Jill Stein for President. Please feel free to join us even if you can't stay for the entire event. *===========================* Jill Stein campaign makes history! The Green Party's presidential nominee, Dr. Jill Stein, has become the first Green Party candidate in history to qualify for federal matching funds, and the first non-duopoly candidate to do so since Ross Perot: http://sfgreenparty.org/10-campaigns/40-jill-stein-campaign-makes-history *===========================* Mayor Ed Lee makes history! Just a week after awarding former Mayor Wille Brown a "lifetime achievement award" (for corruption?), Mayor Lee called on his police chief to implement New York City's racist "stop and frisk" policy: http://www.sfgate.com/bayarea/article/Stop-and-frisk-policy-might-cut-viole… Apparently realizing that the elected Sheriff might have something to say about this, Mayor Lee became flustered and appeared to commit felony perjury in his testimony about his decision to suspend Sheriff Ross Mirkarimi. In order to give the Mayor time to get his story straight, his allies interrupted his testimony by claiming there was a bomb threat!
