Governor Schwarzenegger's administration has assembled a massive document proposing major reforms in state government. Citizens are able to submit feedback on the plan, but the deadline is September 30. It is important for Greens to participate in this discussion. Events UPDATE ON CONGRESSIONAL CAMPAIGNS: Terry Baum, Green Party Congressional candidate for District 8, held her official kick-off party at The Lab on Friday September 17. Still fighting to get on the ballot, Terry is hoping to hear soon about whether on not the US Supreme Court will hear her case. She will be running a write-in campaign regardless of what happens, and is mounting a serious challenge against incumbent Democrat and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi. http://www.terrybaum.com Pat Gray, Green Party Congressional candidate for District 12, spoke to a full house of students at San Francisco State University last Thursday. On Friday she held a press conference that was covered on KPFA-FM. As a candidate, Pat has been offered free air-time on KTVU-TV Channel 2 and KQED-TV Channel 9. For more information, visit http://www.votecobb.org/volunteer/Students NEWSREEL OF GREEN PARTY 2004 CONVENTION NOW AVAILABLE: New Spark Media and Arts Collective has assembled a documentary newsreel on the Green Party 2004 Convention in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The new, 30-minute documentary newsreel is titled "Forward 2004!", and features the electrifying debate that occurred during the convention as it attempts to highlight the shared vision within the Green Party of challenging the corporate controlled two-party (one-party) system in order to begin implementing pro-democracy, pro-people policies. The documentary includes interviews with many Greens including Peter Camejo and Medea Benjamin, along with footage of Jason West and many others. New Spark is not-for-profit, so the primary objective is to get this information out there without relying on pressure from corporations, advertising, influential individual donors, or PACs. Nativo Lopez, President of the Mexican American Political Association (MAPA), publicly threw his support to the Green Party this week. MAPA is a multi-partisan advocacy group, formed in 1960, with chapters throughout the state and U.S. representing the Mexican, Mexican-American and Latino communities. House signs are also now available! http://www.patgray.org TERRY BAUM FILES WITH SUPREME COURT: Green Party congressional candidate Terry Baum announced Thursday that she has asked the U.S. Supreme Court to intervene and immediately place her on the November ballot in the 8th Congressional District, now held by House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi. Terry has been fighting a legal battle to get on the ballot since the March 2004 elections, when she ran a write-in campaign. Terry recieved over 1600 write-in votes, but a few voters neglected to connect the arrows next to her name. This technicality caused the San Francisco Department of Elections to decline to place Terry's name on the ballot. There is one endorsement slot left in this race, as four seats are up for election. The endorsement was given in a ranked choice, instant runoff-voting (IRV) style. IRV is an important electoral reform that is supported by the Green Party. The state Coordinating Committee was considering a proposal to call a special General Assembly in order to discuss changing our Presidential Nominee from David Cobb to Ralph Nader. The proposal was rejected, but not before the news media got wind of the issue. The story was covered in the San Francisco Chronicle, USA Today, Associated Press and the Sacramento Bee. Before the final vote, Peter Camejo and David Cobb debated on KPFA-FM's morning show, on Tuesday August 10. http://www.kpfa.org/archives/ The race for District 5 Supervisor has been making headlines. Matt Gonzalez has endorsed Green candidate Ross Mirkarimi. TERRY BAUM UPDATE: Terry Baum filed a Writ of Mandate, which is a kind of emergency appeal, at the California Appellate Court on Monday, asking to have her contested write-in votes counted, which would cause her to be put on the ballot as the Green candidate for Congress in District 8. She has asked the court to render an opinion by Monday, August 16. The case was assigned to a reasonably liberal panel of judges. Terry hopes that this will be the final stage of a long, absurd journey in search of Democracy in San Francisco. www.terrybaum.com "OWN YOUR OWN PRECINCT" PROJECT FOR PAT GRAY: The Pat Gray Campaign will be meeting every Saturday and Sunday at its campaign office to go out as a group to precinct walk in different cities. Events TERRY BAUM NEWS: Just 5 months ago, this newsletter was celebrating the write-in victory of Green Congressional Candidate Terry Baum. But her efforts to get on the ballot have been repeatedly stalled, and last week there was more bad news. Judge Quidachay ruled that Terry Baum cannot have her name placed on the November ballot. Terry's attorney is continuing legal efforts to get her name on the ballot, but the court decision was a major setback. Baum will be a write-in candidate regardless of court decisions. Miller is one block north of Grand Avenue, just off Highway 101. House and yard signs are being developed for Pat, and should be ready by next week. A speakers training and materials will be provided. A Volunteer Coordinator is also needed. Hello Fellow Greens, In this update: 1. National Women's Caucus Is Seeking Women to Run for Office in the Caucus 2. News 3. Events NATIONAL WOMEN'S CAUCUS IS SEEKING WOMEN TO RUN FOR OFFICE IN THE CAUCUS: If you have been waiting for a chance to shine as a woman leader, wait no longer. The National Women's Caucus of the Green Party of the United States is seeking women to run for office in the Caucus. 2 Co-chairs (1 year/2 year) Secretary Treasurer 2 Spokespeople (1 year/2 year). Delegate to GP-US CC Alternate to GP-US CC All terms are 2 years unless noted otherwise for this election only. The Committee will be made up of these 8 positions and the delegates to the Diversity Committee (up to 3). Nominations are open now through July 30th. Please consider running or nominating someone you think will be a good for the position. Only nominees who affirm they are running will be placed on the ballot. You may run for more than one office with the intention of filling only one, please state your preference. If there are too few nominees to fill all positions 1 person may fill 2 positions, with the exception of multiple seats within the following offices: Co-chair, secretary, and treasurer. The By-laws task the caucus with electing a diverse leadership. Please include in your bio the characteristics that you think add to the package you bring to the table. Job Descriptions* Co-chairs: The Co-Chairs shall be responsible for coordinating the day-to-day affairs of the caucus. The two co-chairs shall direct the activities of the caucus, make sure that caucus projects are being carried out, and convene Committee meetings and other caucus meetings. Their responsibilities shall also include financial oversight and acting as Spokesperson when necessary. Secretary: The Secretary shall be responsible for managing necessary communication with the membership, all documentation and records of the Caucus, including meeting minutes and votes. Minutes will be published in a timely fashion. Treasurer: The Treasurer shall be responsible for the fiscal management of the Caucus including regular financial statements to officers and members and budget work. The Treasurer shall follow all GP-US necessary financial procedures. Spokespeople: The Spokespeople are responsible for representing the Caucus to the media and work to promote the Caucus and the GP outside of the party. Delegate to GPUS Coordinating Committee: The Delegate shall be responsible for representing the interests, ideas, proposals, needs, actions, achievements grievances and other elements, reports and updates of the Caucus to the GP-US Coordinating Committee. The Delegate shall also be responsible for casting votes and participating in GP-US Coordinating Committee business, as well as travel to the yearly conference and submitting regular reports to the Caucus. The delegate is also required to participate in two email lists; the National Committee Votes and National Committee Discussion lists. Alternate to GPUS CC: The Alternate Delegate shall be responsible for assisting the Delegate in their duties and to serve in the Delegate's place, including as a voting Delegate, when the Delegate is unable to perform her duties. The alternate is an observer on the 2 GP-US email lists: Votes and Discussion. *These duties and responsibilities may be further defined in the Operating Rules adopted by the Caucus. Friday - Sunday, July 23, 24, and 25 The Annual Northern California Green Campout All Greens are invited to join us for our annual social gathering in the Sly Park Recreation Area, Pollock Pines, California (up hwy 50 in El Dorado County). You can join us for all three days or any portion thereof. No reservations needed. Arrive at main gate, and tell them you're with the Green Party at Dogwood camp. This is a large campsite at the back of a large lake (9.5 miles around). The campsite is in a tall pine forest at 4000 feet elevation, and is bordered on the back by only the El Dorado National Forest. Activities include swimming, hiking, boating/canoeing-BYO boat or canoe, and a voluntary fireside joke-fest. Sound like fun?
