The article is available at our web site, www.sfgreenparty.org. Beyondchron has previously profiled Green candidates for Supervisor Renee Saucedo and Lisa Feldstein. Renee Saucedo wrote an article for SanFranciscoSentinel.com, which also covered Renee's endorsement by Matt Gonzalez. Our own Kim Knox also continues to publish regular articles in the Sentinel. The San Francisco Chronicle also did a story on Matt's endorsement of Renee. Read it at our web site www.sfgreenparty.org. The Feminist Issues Group (FIG) will not be meeting in July or August. Congratulations to FIG Co-Chair Maureen DeBoer on her baby girl, Brooke Liberty DeBoer Peters. GREEN PARTY OF CALIFORNIA POLL Across the state, many county organizations and individual Greens have expressed an intention to work for the independent presidential campaign of Ralph Nader and Peter Camejo. This proposal is to endorse the Nader/Camejo campaign and it's signature gathering efforts to place these candidates on an independent ballot line in California. The proposal is made in the interest of unity within the California Green Party, and to allow both the Cobb/LaMarche and Nader/Camejo campaigns to go forward under the Green Party umbrella, assuring that volunteers for both campaigns work within the Green Party and help us build electoral volunteer infrastructure for future Green Party campaigns. Regardless of the results of this poll, the GPCA will place David Cobb on the Green Party ballot in California in accordance with his nomination at the GPUS convention in Milwaukee last month. Counties are only being asked whether or not the GPCA should also endorse the Nader/Camejo campaign and it's efforts to gain an independent ballot line in California. Counties are free at any time to act on their own to make this same endorsement on a county level; The GPCA is conducting this poll to measure support for this endorsement statewide. Proposal "The GPCA will both place David Cobb on the California Green Party ballot line pursuant to the Milwaukee convention, and endorse the signature-gathering and campaign of the Green Party's Peter Camejo and independent Presidential candidate Ralph Nader. Nothing in this decision abrogates any county's right to endorse individually as it sees fit." Process & Timeline For San Francisco Greens only, send your opinion/vote to John-Marc Chandonia, jmc(a)sfgreens.org. Polling will begin immediately and end at 10:00 p.m. Sunday, July 18. EVENTS: Monday, July 12 The Campaigns and Issues Working Group will meet and finish developing questionnaires for school board and community college board candidates. Candidates for City Attorney and Treasurer are also being recruited, offices that will be up for election in 2005. Suggestions are welcome. This working group is also interested in hearing from potential co-chairs. The meeting will be held at 7:30 PM at the SFGP office at 1028 A Howard Street, between 6th and 7th Streets in San Francisco. Wednesday, July 14 SFGP County Council Meeting Meeting begins at 7:30 PM and will be held at the SFGP office. Agenda will include setting timeline and process for Fall endorsements of candidates and initiatives, San Francisco coverage on the GPCA Coordinating Committee, review current San Francisco policy regarding endorsement of non-green presidential candidates, set agenda for General Meeting, choose facilitators, time keepers, etc. Thursday, July 15 Join us at 9 AM in front of Superior Court, 400 McAllister (at Polk) for a rally and press conference in support of Terry Baum's lawsuit to get all her write-in votes counted, so she can be on the ballot as Green Candidate for Congress in CD 8! And then, at long last, the HEARING before the Judge at 9:30 AM in Room 302. Please come out to support Terry as she FINALLY gets her day in court! Terry is the Green Party candidate set to challenge incumbent House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi in the 8th Congressional District. Terry is still fighting to get on the ballot. This is a large campsite at the back of a large lake (9.5 miles around). The campsite is in a tall pine forest at 4000 feet elevation, and is bordered on the back by only the El Dorado National Forest. Activities include swimming, hiking, boating/canoeing-BYO boat or canoe, and a voluntary fireside joke-fest. Sound like fun? Events NEWS: Cobb and Camejo Debate Potential Green Party presidential nominee David Cobb and Ralph Nader's running mate Peter Camejo participated in a debate over Green strategy in the 2004 elections on Democracy Now. Ralph Nader's pick of Peter Camejo as a running mate also got lots of coverage, with mentions on the NBC Nightly News, the ABC's World News Tonight, and The Daily Show with Jon Stewart. EVENTS: Saturday, June 26 Join Green Party Congressional candidate Terry Baum at the DYKE MARCH! The Saturday night Super Rally will be aired on C-Span channel 23 beginning at 5:30 PM local time. For the latest convention news, visit http://gp.org/convention/. Saturday and Sunday, June 26 & 27 LGBT Pride Weekend Our location in the Parade line-up has changed slightly. We are now contingent #158. We will meet in area "L", on Beale Street between Folsom and Bryant. We will still gather on Sunday at 11:00am, and begin marching sometime between 11:30 and 1:00. If you are late, and you can't find us on Beale Street, the best bet is to wait at the corner of Market and Main, and ask a blue-shirted safety monitor to let you into the parade route as we pass (giving them our contingent number will help). There is also an accessibility tent at Market and Main, for those who need a comfortable place to wait for the parade to start. For those who haven't done this before, keep in mind that we will be standing or marching for several hours in whatever weather San Francisco throws at us that day. It's a good idea to bring a hat, sunscreen, layers of clothing, water and a snack. Our booth will still be located on Larkin between Fulton and McAllister, across from the Asian Art Museum. Monday, June 28 Help Renee Saucedo gather signatures at Fahrenheit 9/11 House Parties! House Parties for Fahrenheit 9/11 "Virtual Town Meeting" with Michael Moore are being held all over San Francisco (and the nation) at 7 PM. Green Party candidate for Supervisor in District 9 Renee Saucedo is organizing volunteers to get signatures for her at these events. Wednesday, June 30th Come help launch a broad coalition of labor, community groups, churches, elected officials, citizens and immigrants to pass the Immigrant Voting Rights initiative in the November 2004 election. We have endorsed Green candidate Renee Saucedo in the District 9 Supervisor race! Green Party activist Christina Olague has been nominated to the Planning Commission. Events NEWS The San Francisco Green Party endorsed Renee Saucedo for District 9 Supervisor at our last general meeting. Renee is a long time community activist who is very well-known in the community. She is running a strong campaign, and we are happy to giver her our support. Monday, June 21 The Board of Supervisors Rules Committee will hold a hearing at 11 AM (City Hall, 2nd Floor Supervisor Chambers) on a proposal to restructure the Rent Board Commission. The proposal would give tenants 2/3 of the seats on a 7 member Board and to give the Supervisors 4 of the 7 appointments (and approval power over the Mayor's appointments). Currently, Mayor Newsom gets to appoint all of the Rent Board Commissioners and tenants get only 40% of the seats, even though we make up 66% of the city! Monday, June 21 Campaigns and Issues Working Group will be putting together an Education Questionnaire for School Board and Community College candidates. Meeting will be held from 7 - 9 PM at the SFGP office, 1028 A Howard Street, between 6th and 7th Streets in San Francisco. Wednesday, June 23 Citywide Energy Planning Meeting from 5 - 7 PM at the Bayview Opera House, located at 4075 Third Street in San Francisco. Thursday, June 24 The SFGP Housing and Land Use Seminar Series Presents: Building Housing in San Francisco: A For Profit Developers Perspective. The seminar will be held from 7 - 9 PM at the New College of California, located at 777 Valencia Street, between 18th and 19th Streets in San Francisco. Teresa Ojeda of the San Francisco Planning Department will moderate the seminar. This month's workshop features Marc Babsin of the Emerald Fund, one of the city's prominent real estate developers, and Debra Stein, who has an extensive background working with local communities and political groups to shepherd projects through the planning process. Marc will give us his insights about the issues facing developers when they try to build housing in San Francisco. Debra will share her expertise in bridging differences among competing interests during the development process. The issues facing for- profit developers are something we don't talk much about in the Green Party or in other progressive circles, and we're looking forward to hearing their perspectives. Hello Fellow Greens, Congratulations to our own Ross Mirkarimi, who won a national award from Campaigns and Elections magazine! Read more below in the news section. In other important news, Green Party Congressional candidate Terry Baum will finally get her day in court on June 15, and the Campaigns and Issues Working Group is looking for new co-chairs. Details are below. The agenda for our next SFGP general meeting, to be held Wednesday June 16, is posted at the bottom of this email. Our own Ross Mirkarimi, Co-Founder of the Green Party of California and current candidate for District 5 Supervisor, was named one of 15 national "rising stars", and won an award for "General Excellence" from the Campaigns & Elections magazine. Only Green candidates who have filed, answered or questionnaire, and asked for our endorsement qualify. So far, that's just Lucrecia Bermudez and Renee Saucedo. If another candidate qualifies by Wednesday, the straw poll will include a runoff if no candidate gets 50%+1. We'll poll active members which of the 2 candidates to consider endorsing. You can vote only for one candidate, or not at all; abstentions do not count in this straw poll. We'll then go into a full consensus proposal on the leading candidate. (Clarifying questions, Concerns & Affirmations, Concerns may propose friendly amendments or be asked to stand aside, possible vote). If we vote, the threshold for endorsements is 75% of the yes and no votes. People can also abstain, but the proposal fails if the number of abstentions is greater than 25% of the total yes and no votes. People can also choose not to vote or abstain, in which case they aren't counted. Clarification of what an early endorsement means: The endorsement will allow for use of GP resources, including: non-fundraising lists, use of website, access to office and equipment (rent for use of office as campaign office), inclusion in all outreach to voters (slate cards, phonebanking, etc.). We will do another consideration of D9 candidates including non-Greens and do IRV ranking following the August 6th filing deadline. 6) We'll consider all 3 at once, with consensus or a 2/3 vote required to confirm. If this fails, all 3 will be considered individually. 9) Transportation will present a plank; concerns may be raised over the next month, but the decision will be made at the next GM. Consent calendar items (item 3): a) This would allow non-citizens with parents in the SF schools to vote in school board elections. Mixed Greens recommends endorsing this. b) This legislation would create an "open primary" for all statewide offices. Only the top 2 candidates, regardless of party, would advance to the general election. This would effectively prevent Greens from running candidates in these races, and it's the same system by which David Duke made a runoff in Louisiana. The GPCA CC and Electoral Reform WG recommend endorsing NO on this. Letter from Mixed Greens (item 4): To: San Francisco Board of Supervisors From: Mixed Greens RE: Appointments to Commissions Given the controversy of recent appointments to City Commissions, the Mixed Greens, the people of color caucus of the San Francisco Green Party, urges the Board of Supervisors to adopt the following procedures for appointments affecting communities of color and immigrants: 1. When appointments for City Commissions impacting the lives and interests of communities of color and immigrants are up for discussion and vote the BOS will do everything in its power to consult and receive input from the communities affected by the appointments. 2. We strongly support the BOS convening public hearings and town hall meetings in communities of color and immigrant communities to discuss and receive the input of those affected communities. 3. Public hearings and town hall meetings should be organized with sufficient outreach to community organizations, churches, etc., to guarantee full participation from the community. Community-based and faith-based organizations that already have established relationships in the community and other outreach tools should be used to ensure attendance at these events. These hearings should be organized at times and dates to allow for full public participation, i.e. not during typical work day hours. Budgets for these meetings should include child care providers, translation services and audio-visual recording. 4. Supervisors should make every effort to attend meetings the community has already established. This is an opportunity to reach voters who may otherwise not participate in any political forum. Meetings are organized by various groups throughout each district and afford an opportunity to discuss open seats and possible appointments. We hope these suggestions are earnestly considered and implemented in a timely manner. We acknowledge there are existing time and budget constraints; however, we believe engaging the community in determining its civic leadership is a significant responsibility of a district supervisor. Pat Gray, our Green Party candidate who is challenging Mr. Lantos in the 12th Congressional District, said in response to this development, "Our youth, who are our promise for the future, are dying for a lie. Lantos' support of the occupation of Iraq and Palestine needs to be challenged like this. We need to bring the troops home and end this nightmare now." CMRs) from cosmetics. By September 2004, cosmetics sold in European Union countries must be free of these CMR chemicals, including two phthalates, DEHP and DBP. The Campaign for Safe Cosmetics is asking cosmetics companies to make these safer products available in all the markets worldwide where they sell their products. The Breast Cancer Fund is hosting this event, which will take place from 6:00 - 8:30 PM at The Women's Building, located at 3543 18th Street in San Francisco. Despite speculation about an early endorsement, we did not yet reach consensus on endorsing any candidate, nor did we grant any candidate access to our San Francisco Green Party resources at this time. Nevertheless, we encourage Greens to get involved in the campaigns, as many are taking off already. Events FUNDRAISING JOB OPPORTUNITY: The San Francisco Green Party is accepting applications for fundraisers! The SF Green Party is accepting proposals from professional and volunteer fundraisers to contact its 14,000+ registered voters this summer to raise money to support candidates and issues that advance Green values. Proposals are due by June 2. The Green Party County Council will evaluate the proposals and select the fundraising team or team(s) at its June 9 meeting. Application details are below: The list: 3,000 registered Greens who voted in recent elections. Some have phone numbers, some do not. We can provide contact information for services that will look up the phone numbers for a fee, or you can propose to look up those numbers yourself. The job: contact them by phone. Ask them to make a donation to the SF Green Party, preferably a "sustaining" donation charged periodically to their credit card in an ongoing manner. Communicate our values and goals to the member. Get an email address if all else fails so we can continue to contact them more easily. Conduct all mail follow-up, including sending pledge cards and thank you notes to all donors. Provide information to in a predetermined electronic format to the Finance Working Group. The compensation: entirely up to the fundraising teams. The Green Party's goal is to raise money both in the short term and the long term. Even if this effort breaks even in the short term, it is likely it will make money in the long term through renewing donations. The winning proposals will be those that provide the best chance of earning net income for the SFGP while faithfully communicating Green Party values. And then what did it do with what it knew? There's a new book making its way up the sales chart at Amazon.com. Green Party member Dave Heller told me about it a few weeks ago. He said it would blow my mind. It did. The book is "The New Pearl Harbor - Disturbing questions about the Bush Administration and 9/11". Richard Falk, professor emeritus at Princeton, writes that this book is a "painstakingly scrupulous look at the evidence, with an accounting of the numerous discrepancies between the official account provided by the US government and the best information available. " "It does not belong in the genre of 'conspiracy theories'." The author, David Ray Griffin, Professor of Religion at Claremont College, states that he wrote the book after a fellow professor urged him to look into several studies done on the events of 9/11. "I was surprised, even amazed, to see - even though Thompson [one of the researchers] limits himself strictly to mainline sources - how much evidence he had found that points to the conclusion that the Bush administration did indeed intentionally allow the attacks of 9/11 to happen." Thursday, May 27 Housing and Land Use Seminar: Landlords, Tenants, and Rent Control: Is Consensus Ever Possible? This month's workshop features two long-time participants with San Francisco rent control laws, perhaps San Francisco's thorniest land use issue of all. The topic goes to the heart of the question of who is going to live here in the decades to come. Every year tenants save hundreds of millions of dollars from rent control restrictions on landlords - yet every year there are more rent controlled apartments permanently lost to Ellis Act evictions, apartment mergers, owner-move-in evictions and developers building new housing not subject to rent control on parcels that once contained rent controlled units. Join us on and learn about the history of San Francisco rent control, how it currently operates, who benefits and who loses, and what challenges lie in the future. Presentations will be given by Janan New, Executive Director of San Francisco Apartment Association, and Ted Gullickson, Office Manager at San Francisco Tenants Union. Audience questions and involvement are encouraged. As always, the seminar is free and open to the public. There will be a $5 suggested donation at the door, with no one turned away for lack of funds.
