A prize-winning Japanese independent journalist, Takeharu Watai, has produced a film depicting the daily lives of Iraqi people following the launch of the U.S.-led war on the country in March 2003. In Baghdad, Samawa, Falluja, and at Abu Ghraib, Watai listened to the voices of the Iraqi people and succeeded in catching glimpses of the truth about the Iraq war that mainstream media have failed to capture. To capture the true essence of the situation in Iraq, the filmmaker purposely left out narration and background music. He simply allowed the daily sounds of air bombardments, helicopters, and approaching armored vehicles to tell the story. Watai has published various articles on Iraq and made frequent live news reports on Japanese mainstream television during the Baghdad air raids. City-funded non-profit agencies cannot retain experienced workers as they are pushed out of San Francisco by the rising cost-of-living. High turn- over is threatening the quality of services that San Franciscans expect and need. The wage required under the Minimum Compensation Ordinance for non-profit workers working on a city service contract has fallen below the city-wide minimum wage. Homecare workers only received a 1.6 percent wage increase last year and the inflation rate was 2.8 percent. The problem is, the new Congress doesn't look very different than the old Congress that we supposedly voted out of office. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid is promoting a troop increase, Nancy Pelosi said that she won't defund the war, and now President Bush is asking for at least $127 billion more to waste on our failed venture in Iraq. Although voters expressed a clear mandate to end the war in Iraq, Democratic Congressional leaders are already on record promising to continue the violence in our name and with our tax dollars. On that day, hundreds of thousands of people will march outside Congress and the White House in Washington, D.C. to demand an end to the war in Iraq. The Bay Area’s voice must be heard in solidarity. Some of us voted for the Democrats, some voted for the Greens or Peace and Freedom parties, some didn’t vote at all, but we all agree that we cannot put our faith in the politicians to bring our troops home now. We owe it to the Iraqi people and to the American troops in Iraq to rebuild the anti-war movement, and to do it now. One of the biggest obstacles facing the anti-war movement was the sense that Bush was invincible and that protesting didn’t matter. In San Francisco, hundreds of thousands of people marched on February 16, 2003 to try to prevent the war. Most of them are more opposed to the occupation now than they were back then, but most of their opposition has been passive. It’s time to appeal to them to come back to the streets. We have to take advantage of the new expectations and the new hope that millions are drawing from watching Rumsfeld pack his bags and see Bush get a “thumping,” as he put it. We do not have to agree on everything. This organizing meeting will be open to everyone who agrees that: Rumsfeld is Gone: Time to Bring the Troops Home from Iraq Now! Other demands, such as End the Occupation in Afghanistan, Free Palestine/End Aid to Israel, No Sanctions against Iran, Defend Arab and Muslims from Racist Attacks, US Out of the Middle East and others can be discussed and decided upon by the group as a whole at the meeting. Please spread the word far and wide and attend this important meeting. Bring your friends and family. You don’t have to have experience to participate. You don’t have to live in San Francisco. You don’t have to know everything about the Middle East! The march will be a statement asking for redierection in federal, state, and local policies as we stand with mothers that children have been murdered on our streets. "Bringing Forth Light From Darkness" is intended to bring women, men and children from the Bay Area and nation who have been adversely affected by violence and the abandonment of federal, state and local resources to curb violence here at home. In addition, this march will bring awareness to the current war in Iraq in an effort to bring our American troops home. We can discuss how and why we made the endorsements we did, and factors we can include moving forward. --------- 11/17: Supervisor Ross Mirkarimi Features the Art of Gail Camhi, Jacqueline Ruben, Heike Seefeldt, and Sue Vaughan WHEN: Friday, November 17, 2006 5:00PM-8:00PM WHERE: San Francisco City Hall, 1 Carlton B Goodlett Place, Room 282, San Francisco CONTACT: (415) 554-7630 DETAILS: This month’s featured artists are Gail Camhi, Jacqueline Ruben, Heike Seefeldt, and Sue Vaughan. In charcoal, pencil, pastels, collage, markers, watercolors, and mixed-media, these artists engage us in an exploration of diverse landscape genres. Gail Camhi is showing Landscape of the Imagination. In watercolor, Ms. Camhi uses wet on wet technique to activate responsive dialogues with color, and allows her subjects to present herself as part of the explorative process. Gail Camhi was born in NYC and moved to San Francisco in 1982. She studied painting and drawing at Brooklyn Museum Art School, and later earned a B.A. from Hunter College in painting and still photography. Jacqueline Ruben is presenting Landscapes of Distance and Approach. Her paintings emerge from the spark of all the impressions and sensations swirling around us in the phenomenal world. This mixed media series of four paintings explores the intersection of interior space with the peripheral world. Ms. Ruben teaches adult and youth drawing and painting classes at City College of San Francisco Continuing Education, and Sharon Art Studio in Golden Gate Park. She also teaches art at the San Francisco Unified School District. Her artwork has been exhibited throughout the United States and can be viewed online at www.jacquelineartworks.com Heike Seefeldt will exhibit Landscape of Manipulation. By arranging and manipulating diverse materials in a collage overlay technique, Ms. Seefeldt questions the extent to which raw information is manipulated and channeled by media, politics and religious messages. She is a native German, who received an MFA from University of Fine Arts in Dresden, Germany. In 2004, Ms. Seefeldt settled in San Francisco, and has since been working for a great variety of theater, television and mural companies in the Bay Area. More of her artworks can be found on her website www.pintofpaint.com Sue Vaughan will exhibit Landscape of the Human Body. Many of the portrait and figure drawings included in this show were created at the San Francisco Art Institute or the Mission Cultural Center, and are based on black and white photographs from the book, The Body: Photographs of the Human Body, by William Ewing. Sue Vaughan began to explore portrait drawing in high school. She discovered her talent for figure drawing in college.
