We are down to the final two weeks of the June election season, and Aimee Allison is close to becoming the first Green Party member elected to Oakland's City Council. Recent polling indicates that Aimee is running virtually neck-to-neck with her main opponent, incumbent Pat Kernighan, so we have a real shot at victory this June. In order to win, however, we need strong volunteer turnout these last two weeks of the campaign. This means that we need every active Green to commit to working at least one volunteer shift between now and the final weekend of the campaign, and an additional few hours Sun, Mon, Tues, June 4-6 to help put us over the top. We really need as many volunteers and as much presence as possible! Please take a look at the schedule below and contact the campaign to let us know when you are coming. The campaign phone is 510-277-0182; we are located at 3208 Grand Ave next to the Grand Lake Theater in Oakland (car free and driving directions are at the end of this post). VOLUNTEER SHIFTS: WEEKDAY VISIBILITY: 7-9 am. We need at least one volunteer every morning to both accompany Aimee and work in volunteer teams to meet voters in high traffic pedestrian areas. We need volunteers for May 30, 31, June 1,2, 5 and 6. WEEKDAY VISIBILITY: 5-7 PM. Volunteers are needed to both accompany Aimee and work in volunteer teams at high visibility locations and to do sign waving and visibility at busy intersections. We need volunteers the following days: May 24, 25, 26 (Grand Lake Theater visibility on Friday night), 29, 30, 31, June 1, 4, 5 and 6. WEEKDAY CALLING: 12-8:30 pm daily (Mon-Thurs). We are calling District 2 voters to identify support and persuade undecided voters. Calling begins at 12 each day (to seniors) and continues until 8:30 each night. Callers are needed every day and evening. Meals and yummy snacks are provided. WEEKEND MOBILIZATIONS: Beginning 10 am Saturday and 12:00 noon on Sundays. We will be phone banking and dispatching volunteers to lit drop and do visibility the last two weekends, May 27-29 (Memorial Day Weekend) and June 3-4 (Get Out The Vote Weekend). We need as many volunteers as possible all day on both weekends. GOTV- Get Out The Vote: June 5-6. We will be doing GOTV activities the final weekend AND Monday and Tuesday, June 5 and 6th. We need volunteers who can commit to 6 hour shifts on Monday and Tuesday- election day- to help make sure our supporters make it to the polls. Please consider taking some time off work to help on either or both of these days if you can. (transit runs about every 30 minutes on each line on the weekends, go to http://www.actransit.org for the schedule). BART and biking/walking: BART to the 19th Street station. Walk/bike up 20th Ave towards Lake Merritt, go left around the lake (look for the colorful Fairyland sign on the hill above the lake) and continue East around the lake on Grand Ave, past several blocks of storefronts and back along the lake until you see the Grand Lake Theater sign. The walk takes about 20-25 minutes and about 10 minutes by bike. Driving: Take the 580 Fwy East to the Grand Ave/Lakeview St. exit. Turn Left on Grand Ave. Please try to carpool if you are driving. These events are sponsored by the Westside Green Club. --------- 4/24: Salmon rally to help salmon fishermen, communities and the Klamath River WHEN: Monday, April 24th 10:00 a.m. WHERE: Pier 47 - San Francisco DETAILS: This rally, held by Congressman Mike Thompson (CA-01), will bring attention to the salmon season off the coasts of California and Oregon, and also roll-out a disaster assistance bill that is aimed to help the communities in need. Another aspect of the bill will have a conservation component to help restore and monitor the salmon of the Klamath River. The reason for the dramatically shortened salmon season is because the Klamath River will not meet the 35,000 natural spawner floor for fall-run chinook for the third consecutive year. The reported result will likely be a near closure of Oregon and California's commercial ocean, in-river Klamath and tribal fisheries for 2006. The impacts on the California coastal economy from last year's season, which was cut by 60-percent due to poor Klamath River returns, combined to a near closure of this year's season, would be catastrophic and could very likely have permanent affects on the salmon fishing industry and related businesses in both states. The declining salmon populations in the Klamath River basin are due not to over fishing by tribes, the commercial salmon fishing industry or recreational anglers; but federal mismanagement of the Klamath River system which hurt both farmers and fishermen. This mismanagement led to the fish kill in 2002 when up to 78,000 adult salmon died on the Klamath River. It also led to the outbreak of Ceratomyxa Shasta (C. Shasta) which has reportedly infected 80-percent of juvenile salmonids. Mortality from C. Shasta is 100-percent. The former reports have only two self-imposed rules: 1) no interstate highways, and 2) no corporate chains -- including gas stations, restaurants, hotels, and grocery stores. In other words, they can only shop with mom and pop. What they discover during their trip is growing discontent with corporate America, and a growing movement away from globalization and toward localization, as individuals and small businesses across the country band together to preserve not only their livelihoods, but their local communities as well. In Colorado, a Starbucks is repeatedly vandalized. In Texas, a rebellious city forces Borders Books into retreat. Residents of America's Fourth of July capital in Nebraska turn against their new Wal-Mart. And an entire Wyoming town goes into business for itself after it is abandoned by its one chain department store. Along the way, their conversations with corporate executives, economists, entrepreneurs, political leaders, union members, and ordinary Americans from all walks of life lead Hosein and Hughes to conclude that a healthy democracy needs local small businesses if it is to control ever-growing corporate power. The new Israeli government, with the full backing of Washington,has announced its intention to vastly increase settlements in the West Bank and to illegally annex much of the land. Since April 2005, several independent international activists have made regular visits to the neighborhood of Tel Rumeida, Hebron, in the occupied West Bank. Hence, this documentary "The Case of Tel Rumeida." Tel Rumeida is a small neighborhood widely known for housing the most violent and racist faction of the Israeli settler movement. Palestinian families who live directly next to these settlers are often virtual prisoners in their homes and subject to the settlers violent attacks and destruction of property. The 400 fascist settlers, protected by thousands of Israeli troops, control 20% of the city of Hebron, home to 160,000 Palestinians. After meeting many of the Palestinian families in Tel Rumeida, documenting the circumstances in which they are forced to live, and experiencing the settlers violence, the international activists began to develop the foundations to begin a permanent international presence in Tel Rumeida. DETAILS: Don Walsh (HON61, Explorers Medalist'01) is a retired naval deep submersible pilot (the first), a Ph.D. Oceanographer who has taught and written over 200 publications, has worked in the Arctic and Antarctic on over 50 expeditions, is a member of the National Academy of Engineering, has travelled to over 112 nations, served in two wars, graduated from the Naval Academy and Texas A&M and was born in Berkeley. In 2001, he was cited as one of the great explorers in the Life Magazine book, The Greatest Adventures of All Time. With Jacques Piccard he dove Trieste to the deepest place in the World Ocean: 35,840 feet. While still on earth these two men were farthest from sea level than any others, ever. The feat has never been duplicated. This evening's talk will describe the 12-14 hour dives to those famous shipwrecks, and what it was like to enjoy a modest box lunch while sitting on the decks of these ships. It is interesting to know that these dive programs were for paying tourists. In the past seven years nearly 80 have made the two-mile trip down to Titanic and about 12 to Bismarck. A brief history of each ship's loss will be given to provide a context for the diving operations. Don will even tell you how anyone can join these expeditions. On March 2nd we hit them in 30 cities across the country and in Canada, including a 35 person action on the Money Mart store at 7th and Market. We gave Money Mart the Loan Shark of the Year Award. Stand Out!°± is a free leadership training program aimed at empowering women from Bayview Hunters Point by helping them effect change in their neighborhood and in their city. This one-day skill-building workshop is intended to begin teaching women how to organize around community issues and best approach local officials. As NWPC-SF President Alix Rosenthal said: °∞Our core mission is to get more women involved in politics. We can work towards this goal by helping to demystify the processes by which local governments make the decisions that most directly affect women and their communities.°± The program will kick off with an introductory greeting from S.F. Supervisor Sophie Maxwell, followed by a panel of guest speakers including local commissioners Angelo King (Bayview Hunters Point Project Area Committee, Environmental Commission), and Willie Kennedy (Southeast Community Facilities Commission). The session will finish with smaller, interactive group discussions facilitated by grass roots organizers, which will focus on strategies and skill building. The National Women's Political Caucus is a multicultural, intergenerational, and multi-issue grassroots organization dedicated to increasing women°Øs participation in the political process. The San Francisco NWPC caucus has been in existence since 1973, working hard locally in support of the NWPC mission: to recruit, train and support pro-choice women candidates for elected and appointed offices at all levels of government. Non-Greens are welcomed to all HLU meetings. --------- 4/5: Expand the First Source Hiring Program WHEN: Wednesday, April 5th 1:00PM WHERE: San Francisco City Hall, 1 Carlton B Goodlett Place, Budget and Finance Committee Hearing, Board chambers DETAILS: This hearing was previously scheduled for March 29. The city currently has a 1st Source Hiring Program that is supposed to connect low-income and historically disadvantaged peoples with job opportunities. Companies list job openings for entry level positions with the program and the program distributes this information to public assistance programs, community organizations and other centers that serve the disadvantaged. Low-income people then have an advantage of applying for the jobs early. Unfortunately this program has not be given the resources to be effective. Support Supervisor Mirkarimi's legislation to improve the program and bring more jobs to the poor. Supervisor Mirkarimi's legislation will do the following: 1. Expand the types of jobs available to low-income and disadvantaged people to go beyond construction into other industries with more growth in SF. 2. Ensure that the program gets enough resources to be successful via fines that will be strictly enforced on companies that don't comply with offering jobs to low-income and disadvantaged people first. 3. Reduce poverty in SF by increasing creating more avenues for low-income people to get access to jobs with the opportunity for advancement. Take Action! Attend the Budget and Finance Committee Hearing and tell the Board you support expanding the First Source Hiring program. Along the way, their conversations with corporate executives, economists, entrepreneurs, political leaders, union members, and ordinary Americans from all walks of life lead Hosein and Hughes to conclude that a healthy democracy needs local small businesses if it is to control ever-growing corporate power. The film will be followed by a panel discussion. ============================== ANNOUNCEMENTS & ACTION ALERTS: Bay Area Reporter and Fairmont boycott The Harvey Milk LGBT Democratic Club just found out that the Bay Area Reporter is planning on holding their 35th Anniversary at the Fairmont Hotel this Friday. Local 2 members were locked out by the Fairmont for 53 days and currently are engaged in a long-standing, nearly 2-year boycot of the Hotel--the boycott is still on. It's tough to move an event at the last minute, but it's critical that queer community groups hold the line on the boycott.
