Buy Nothing Day (BND) is recognized every year all around the world – andthroughout California – as a day for consumers to challenge themselves, andfamily, to "switch-off" from shopping and rampant consumerism. BND exposes the consequences of consumerism, and the fact that just 20percent of the world's people consume more than 80 percent of the naturalresources, placing a disproportionate level of environmental damage ondeveloping countries. BND also makes the point that while shopping in malls and grocery storesmight offer choice, it often does so as the cost of hurting the environmentin developing countries. He runs up huge credit card bills. At the end of the month, if I try to pay them off, he shouts at me, saying I am stealing his money. He says pay the minimum, and let our kids worry about the rest, but already we can hardly keep up with the interest. Also he has been so arrogant and abusive toward our neighbors that most of them no longer speak to us. The few that do are an odd bunch, to whom he has been giving a lot of expensive gifts, running up our bills even more. Also, he has gotten religious in a big way, although I don't quite understand it. One week he hangs out with Catholics and the next with people who say the Pope is the Anti-Christ. And now he has been going to the gym an awful lot and is into wearing uniforms and cowboy outfits, and I hate to think what that means. Finally, the last straw. Ross's ordinance requiring that The City post warnings about mercury in seafood in Spanish, Chinese and English is praised by a public healthy advocacy organization and declared "the first of its kind in the nation." The San Francisco Board of Supervisors all voted in favor of Ross's medical marijuana club legislation, composed of guidelines supporting local, legitimate medical cannabis dispensaries (MCDs). Among other things, these guidelines ensure that each MCD only serve patients with official medical marijuana identification cards, and that they not operate within 500 feet of schools; 1,000 feet if smoking is allowed on the premises. ÃÂ·Â Â Â Â Resolution in support o Stanley Tookie WilliamsÃ¢â¬â¢ request for Clemency. Working in conjunction with city government, supermarkets operated by Albertsons, Andronicos, Bell Markets, CalMart, Cala Foods, Foods Co, Mollie Stone's, and Safeway have set a reduction target of 10,000,000 by the end of 2006. "San Francisco is a global recycling leader. We now recycle more than two-thirds of all our waste," said Mayor Newsom. "Today, our city is taking a historic step to reduce the use of disposable items such as grocery store bags," Newsom continued, "This is just the beginning if we are to become a truly sustainable city." In 2003, City government adopted goals of 75 percent landfill diversion by 2010 and zero waste by 2020. These diversion goals intend to achieve a cleaner, healthier local environment and minimize the negative impacts of solid waste. This partnership is made possible by local stores' willingness to pursue innovative measures to reduce consumption and disposal of checkout bags, as well as the City's willingness to work with local stores in a cooperative measure. "This is a first step whose merit shall be judged in due time, in making certain that this is not an industry driven remedy," said Supervisor Mirkarimi. The target reduction of 10 million bags may represent up to twenty percent of the total bags distributed in San Francisco on an annual basis-the exact figure of bags used annually will be captured through monitoring by the city. A reduction of 10 million bags will keep 95 tons of material plastic out of San Francisco's waste stream, and will reduce San Francisco's contribution of greenhouse gas emissions by nearly 1 million pounds of CO2. This is equivalent to 44,000 gallons of oil or taking more than 14,000 automobiles off the road for a day. The Commission on the Environment first looked at the issue of grocery checkout bag reduction in San Francisco in late 2004. Subsequently, Mayor Newsom and Supervisor Ross Mirkarimi co-sponsored a resolution focusing on reduction measures, and have worked together with industry to craft the voluntary reduction agreement. The Department of the Environment is charged with ensuring that the goals of the Agreement are implemented. "We will immediately work with the grocery stores to determine an accurate baseline for the number of bags distributed. We will then monitor the supermarkets' progress towards reaching the reduction targets," said Jared Blumenfeld, Director of the San Francisco Department of the Environment. WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Green Parties across the U.S. are marking the announcement that 2,000 members of the U.S. Armed Forces have been killed in Iraq, with vigils, protest rallies against the continued occupation, and other events. "We're remembering the 2,000 dead American troops, thousands more injured, and also the tens of thousands of Iraqi civilians killed as a result of the U.S. invasion and occupation," said Rebecca Rotzler, co-chair of the Green Party of the United States, co-chair of the party's Peace Action Committee, and Deputy Mayor of New Paltz, New York. "'Occupation' has become a euphemism for continued war." Greens noted that the number of estimated civilian Iraqi casualties -- uncounted by the U.S. Department of Defense -- ranges from 24,000 to more than 100,000, and that U.S. military deaths which occur outsidea a war zone from injuries sustained within a war zone are not counted within the Defense Department's 2,000 figure. Green Party leaders emphasized the need for concerted political action to follow up on the September 24 protests in Washington, D.C. and other cities against the war. "Unless Americans appalled by the direction of our country take steps to remove the Bush Administration and the Republicans and Democrats who supported the war, the September 24 demos will have limited effect," said Steve Kramer, co-chair of the Green Party. In Wisconsin, Greens have initiated a ballot referendum which, if approved by voters in an April 2006 election, will authorize the state to demand the complete and immediate withdrawal of U.S. troops. The Green Party called for the impeachment of President Bush in July, 2003, citing the numerous deceptions and violations of U.S. constitutional and international law behind the invasion. The party has also strongly criticized Democrats and Republicans who surrendered Congress's constitutionally mandated power to declare war to President Bush, and has condemned the requests from some Democratic leaders to increase troop numbers, especially Sen. Hillary Clinton's (N.Y.) call for 80,000 more troops. In calling for a White House order to begin the withdrawal of U.S. troops immediately, the Green Party has rejected the position of Democrats who ask for a plan to withdraw troops by the end of 2006. "Every day the occupation is prolonged, more American troops and Iraqi civilians will be killed and maimed, we're no closer to stability in Iraq, and are possibly nearer to a civil war there," said Jody Grage Haug, Green Party co-chair and GPAX member. "The thousands of dead soldiers and civilians, nonexistent WMDs, forged evidence of an Iraqi nuclear threat (highlighted by the Plame scandal), torture in Abu Ghraib, and realization that a radical political ideology has motivated a massive abuse of power have resulted in majority opposition to the war, according to recent polls." Phthalates and toxic flame-retardants were present in 18 of 25 products tested by the Environment California Research and Policy Center and the U.S. PIRG Education Fund. The study, which was motivated by existing bans on six types of phthalates in Europe, was released today. The report calls for a ban on the most toxic chemicals in children's products, including flame retardants known as PBDEs and 6 types of phthalates. There are currently no restrictions on phthalates in children's products. A statewide ban on the manufacture and distribution of two PBDEs, Penta and Octa, will take effect on June 1, 2006. AB319, written by Assemblywoman Wilma Chan, D-Oakland, aims to ban phthalates from products used by children under 3. If passed, it would go into effect Jan. 1, 2007. Phthalates, which make plastics soft and pliable, are commonly found in baby products such as plastic teething rings and plastic books, and in personal care products. PBDEs are present in products such as electronics casing, furniture foam and fabric backing. According to the report, "phthalates are linked to premature birth, reproductive defects and early onset puberty." The report cites a study of 85 babies by Dr. Shanna Swan at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry, which found that prenatal exposure to phthalates can affect genital development in boys. Some children's products labeled "phthalate-free" or "non-toxic" tested positive in the study, and Environment California recommends using wooden toys as a safer alternative to plastic. The best way to ensure that plastic toys are phthalate-free is to contact manufacturers directly, said Rachel Gibson of Environment California. The elections board voted unanimously Friday to disqualify Brown as a candidate for mayor and remove her from the voter rolls after a week of considering whether or not she has lived in the city long enough to be a candidate. It is hard to describe in one short post the amazing level of organization and work that is coming out of this small, young organization. For now, here are a few ideas: 1. There is a national caravan being organized from November 20-27 to bring folks from across the US to work over Thanksgiving week to help rebuild the 9th Ward in New Orleans. Plans are being made to help folks organize caravans from their communities. The Collective is working on developing hubs to work out of, set up housing and other infrastructure to support volunteers to help in this effort. The plan is to have 300 volunteers work block by block cleaning up the 9th ward. Clean up includes refuse removal (much is being hauled out by the Army Corps of Engineers, but there will still be lots to do on this front). Volunteers will work side by side with residents of the 9th ward to make this community habitable and functional, so people can move back into their community. IF YOU CAN SWING IT, PLAN TO SPEND THANKSGIVING WEEK NEW ORLEANS! There will be organizing in SF, if you can help, we can work together to set up a team to help get the SF caravan ready to go. 2. The needs are overwhelming, and it is amazing how much this group has done with so little. Yes, of course, funds are needed, but that is not the only need. I will try to get a comprehensive lis of things that we can help line up to have shipped here. Efforts are underway to ask for donations from corporations and businesses large and small. In the meantime, they still need items either sent or driven here. I will post a list soon. 3. If you can arrange time off anytime, there are specific skills that are useful, especially skilled labor like construction, legal aid, medical assistants, computer skills, finance and accounting skills. Bye for now, peace, susan ********************************************************** STUDENTS GREET MILITARY WITH RALLY AND QUEER KISS-IN Students creatively and peacefully block access to military recruiters http://santacruz.indymedia.org/feature/display/17213/index.php Today, October 18th, 2005 UCSC Students Against War (SAW) organized a nonviolent rally and Queer Kiss-in against the presence of military recruiters on the UC Santa Cruz Campus. About forty students participated in protest of the militarys discriminatory Dont Ask, Dont Tell policy. The Queer Kiss-in was staged in front of the militarys tables during the march and rally. From inside the fair, kissers were able to effectively block access to military recruiters without shutting down the entire career fair. When asked about why the Queer Kiss-in was the most effective tactic to use against the military, Steve S. a third year Literature major answered, The kiss as an act of love is fundamentally antithetical to the military as an institution of war and death and strife. Outside of the University Center over a hundred students rallied against the recruiters and in support of those participating in the kiss-in on the inside. The students were flanked by supportive faculty and staff, many of who wore UCSC Faculty Against War badges. The rally at the College Center lasted for the duration of the career fair and included speeches by students and faculty members such as UC Professor Bettina Aptheker, music, as well as an impromptu question-and-answer session between SAW organizers and rally participants. As they rallied, the students presented a list of five[sic] demands to the UCSC administration. They demanded that: 1) All military recruiters leave the Job Fair immediately; 2) UCSC join dozens of prestigious law schools nation-wide in the Supreme Court case FAIR v Rumsfeld to oppose the Solomon Amendment, which forces colleges to allow military recruiters, even though it violates their own nondiscrimination policies; 3) UCSC Faculty and Administration write a resolution promising to officially ban recruiters from campus as soon as the Solomon Amendment is overturned; and 4) UCSC Chancellor Denice D. Denton make a public statement denouncing military recruitment as a violation of campus non-discrimination policies, affirming the campus will to ban recruiters, once legally able to do so. Second year student, Tom Fleming, who took part in the rally said, I feel that we really made a strong point today, our goals are tangible and the pressure is now on the administration to formulate a strategy that will be in support of the student body. Phthalates and toxic flame-retardants were present in 18 of 25 products tested by the Environment California Research and Policy Center and the U.S. PIRG Education Fund. The study, which was motivated by existing bans on six types of phthalates in Europe, was released today. The report calls for a ban on the most toxic chemicals in children's products, including flame retardants known as PBDEs and 6 types of phthalates. There are currently no restrictions on phthalates in children's products. A statewide ban on the manufacture and distribution of two PBDEs, Penta and Octa, will take effect on June 1, 2006. AB319, written by Assemblywoman Wilma Chan, D-Oakland, aims to ban phthalates from products used by children under 3. If passed, it would go into effect Jan. 1, 2007. Phthalates, which make plastics soft and pliable, are commonly found in baby products such as plastic teething rings and plastic books, and in personal care products. PBDEs are present in products such as electronics casing, furniture foam and fabric backing. According to the report, "phthalates are linked to premature birth, reproductive defects and early onset puberty." The report cites a study of 85 babies by Dr. Shanna Swan at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry, which found that prenatal exposure to phthalates can affect genital development in boys. Some children's products labeled "phthalate-free" or "non-toxic" tested positive in the study, and Environment California recommends using wooden toys as a safer alternative to plastic. The best way to ensure that plastic toys are phthalate-free is to contact manufacturers directly, said Rachel Gibson of Environment California. The elections board voted unanimously Friday to disqualify Brown as a candidate for mayor and remove her from the voter rolls after a week of considering whether or not she has lived in the city long enough to be a candidate. It is hard to describe in one short post the amazing level of organization and work that is coming out of this small, young organization. For now, here are a few ideas: 1. There is a national caravan being organized from November 20-27 to bring folks from across the US to work over Thanksgiving week to help rebuild the 9th Ward in New Orleans. Plans are being made to help folks organize caravans from their communities. The Collective is working on developing hubs to work out of, set up housing and other infrastructure to support volunteers to help in this effort. The plan is to have 300 volunteers work block by block cleaning up the 9th ward. Clean up includes refuse removal (much is being hauled out by the Army Corps of Engineers, but there will still be lots to do on this front). Volunteers will work side by side with residents of the 9th ward to make this community habitable and functional, so people can move back into their community. IF YOU CAN SWING IT, PLAN TO SPEND THANKSGIVING WEEK NEW ORLEANS! There will be organizing in SF, if you can help, we can work together to set up a team to help get the SF caravan ready to go. 2. The needs are overwhelming, and it is amazing how much this group has done with so little. Yes, of course, funds are needed, but that is not the only need. I will try to get a comprehensive lis of things that we can help line up to have shipped here. Efforts are underway to ask for donations from corporations and businesses large and small. In the meantime, they still need items either sent or driven here. I will post a list soon. 3. If you can arrange time off anytime, there are specific skills that are useful, especially skilled labor like construction, legal aid, medical assistants, computer skills, finance and accounting skills. If you know folks who can do these things, please forward this email. I will send more reports later, and a more thorough description of the vision of The Common Ground Collective. Bye for now, peace, susan ********************************************************** STUDENTS GREET MILITARY WITH RALLY AND QUEER KISS-IN Students creatively and peacefully block access to military recruiters http://santacruz.indymedia.org/feature/display/17213/index.php Today, October 18th, 2005 UCSC Students Against War (SAW) organized a nonviolent rally and Queer Kiss-in against the presence of military recruiters on the UC Santa Cruz Campus. About forty students participated in protest of the militarys discriminatory Dont Ask, Dont Tell policy. The Queer Kiss-in was staged in front of the militarys tables during the march and rally. From inside the fair, kissers were able to effectively block access to military recruiters without shutting down the entire career fair. When asked about why the Queer Kiss-in was the most effective tactic to use against the military, Steve S. a third year Literature major answered, The kiss as an act of love is fundamentally antithetical to the military as an institution of war and death and strife. Outside of the University Center over a hundred students rallied against the recruiters and in support of those participating in the kiss-in on the inside. The students were flanked by supportive faculty and staff, many of who wore UCSC Faculty Against War badges. The rally at the College Center lasted for the duration of the career fair and included speeches by students and faculty members such as UC Professor Bettina Aptheker, music, as well as an impromptu question-and-answer session between SAW organizers and rally participants. As they rallied, the students presented a list of five[sic] demands to the UCSC administration. They demanded that: 1) All military recruiters leave the Job Fair immediately; 2) UCSC join dozens of prestigious law schools nation-wide in the Supreme Court case FAIR v Rumsfeld to oppose the Solomon Amendment, which forces colleges to allow military recruiters, even though it violates their own nondiscrimination policies; 3) UCSC Faculty and Administration write a resolution promising to officially ban recruiters from campus as soon as the Solomon Amendment is overturned; and 4) UCSC Chancellor Denice D. Denton make a public statement denouncing military recruitment as a violation of campus non-discrimination policies, affirming the campus will to ban recruiters, once legally able to do so. Second year student, Tom Fleming, who took part in the rally said, I feel that we really made a strong point today, our goals are tangible and the pressure is now on the administration to formulate a strategy that will be in support of the student body. Newsom said one of his motivations was to give the underprivileged access to 802.11 wireless networking, which he called a "fundamental right." "This is a civil rights issue as much as anything else," Newsom said. Given the low place that the poor received in Newsom's budget priorities, this statement may be the most extreme "let-them-eat-cakeism" that he's ever come up with. Vice president of governmental affairs for the National Association of Evangelicals, Cizik is a pro-Bush Bible-brandishing reverend zealously opposed to abortion, gay marriage and embryonic stem-cell research. He is also on a mission to convert tens of millions of Americans to the cause of conservation, using a right-to-life framework. There are too many questions the folks in the white coats shouldn't answer for the rest of us. Cloning, pharmaceutical work, industry-financed studies ... you don't want that stuff going on without some public monitoring and input. And while it might not be as explosive as human cloning, animal experimentation belongs on the list. When is it OK to make animals suffer even suffer badly for the good of human research? Is it acceptable to mangle and abuse animals if the research leads to a cure for cancer? What if it's just pure science that has no immediate human application? Is there a difference between the suffering of a dime-a-dozen lab rat and that of an intelligent monkey? Those are valid policy questions, ones that ought to be discussed openly. But in San Francisco, the opposite is happening. Answer: you fall down. That's the story of the U.S. government, or at least the story of how it fell flat on its face in New Orleans in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. In failing to connect with local communities, the government stumbled wildly in the mud and floodwaters that left tens of thousands of folks without healthcare, housing or hope. I learned this story from the people of Algiers, an impoverished New Orleans neighborhood on the west bank of the Mississippi River. Like the rest of New Orleans, Algiers experienced a mass exodus in the days prior to Katrina. By the time the storm arrived on August 29, the district was emptied of most of its 60,000 residents. Stores were closed, public services shut down, and only the police provided any semblance of working local government. But Algiers was far from a ghost town -- about 20 percent of the houses remained occupied. I visited Algiers at the behest of one of those who stayed behind: Malik Rahim, an ex-Black Panther and former Green Party city council candidate. Rahim stayed because he feared many of the folks left behind would be abandoned.
